1 year later - POV: Kalani

Its been a year since that night. The night we stayed in that cabin, the night Megan's rage took control of her, the night Megan disappeared.

The past year has been a nightmare. Megan always managed to convince us that she brought us together, so when she actually left, we did what we knew best and drifted apart. Aubry, finding an opportunity to reign, swooped in and with a little makeup and expensive jewellery, looked a clone of Megan. So naturally she became queen bee, just like she always wanted and i guess she deserved. Mila, the straight A good girl became best friends with leather jacket and winged eyeliner- clad Amina Sparkes and rebelled against her issues after the stress of losing Megan drove her parents apart. And me, i have became more cautious than ever before, because i like certainty, and the only thing i feel certain of is that Megan isn't gone. So my secrets aren't safe. So for the past year ive really focused on school, getting my head down an my marks up.

The only time i actually saw Aubry and Mila in this past year was at the police interviews. They had a strict routine: Aubry then Mila then me then all of us. They always spent a little bit longer on me, because Aubry and Mila found ways to cope with their mourning, and i opened up to nobody, i haven't cried once, at least not in public, and people don't like to hear that. They like to hear that everything will be fine, and a little girl who lost her best friend will recover and be okay. Because wouldn't it be dreadful to hear the story of the girl whose social life shrivelled up to nothing because she couldn't handle the thought of controlling her own life. I mean, megan always did that for me. That was the one thing i could count on.

So the interviews were repeated again and again and again until they realised that we weren't suspects. We were victims. Victims of whispers in the hallways, side glances at the mall, vicious rumours that never ceased spiralling around our village. The newspapers documented every detail, Megan would be happy, she loved the attention. Each longwinded investigation came to a dead end. The police have been desperate, and theres nothing more dangerous than a desperate police force that will stop at nothing to make ends meet; well, maybe a murderous killer is slightly more dangerous, however i refuse to believe that Megan was murdered.

Maybe she ran away to be something bigger than just the mysterious it girl that everyone either wants to be or be with. After all, she was always afraid that her life would end before 21. Not literally of course, or so we thought. There was always more to Megan than that, the wicked witch had a good side, occasionally. Megan would never put up with a sub-standard life, if she had to go she would go with a bang. The perfectly eventful life for the perfect girl. She was practically born with sequinned stilettos and cherry red lips.
