"What part of this seems okay to you?" I asked. It was the first time I'd ever asked him such a question.
"The part where we are on the winning side Gene. Come on we need to focus." We were overseas on a mission to clear out a village. They only sent Vins and I, because they knew Vins and I could do it without any problem. We were nothing more then weapons for them.
"Do you know what one of the life lessons humans teach kids?"
"I'm sure your gonna tell me." He sighed as I followed him through the trees.
"It's not about winning, it's about having fun, and Vins let me tell you I am not having fun here. What's the point in any of this? What are we gaining from it other then what you think survival is. If we lived like people we wouldn't have to survive Vins, we could live."
"Gene!" He snapped. He pushed my arms against a tree and held me in place. "Do you hear yourself right now? Your gonna get yourself killed! If so much as a soul heard you say that, they'd reprogram you within seconds. He pulled me towards him into an embrace.
"It's not what I think survival is Gene, it's what I know it is. If you go out there, they will search every corner of the world for you. They won't stop until they do, and when they do... well you've seen first hand what they are capable of." He whispered. "I can't lose you Gene... I just can't." His grip tightens before letting me go.
--------
When I woke up from my alarm I was sweating. The memory of vins left itself in my head. I couldn't stop thinking about it. He lost me... and it's my fault.
There was a soft knock on the door and then Rose's face peeked through the corner.
"I've already talked to the school. Everything is ready to go, your just gonna get on the bus with Jack and then head to the office when you get there." She told me.
"Thank you." I told her.
"Mhm, oh and also." She smiled as she opened the door farther to walk in, revealing a plate full of food.
"First day of school deserves a full belly, even though Jack is also getting plate of food. Honestly i'm not normally up this early and I just got bored." I smiled as I took the plate, admiring all the steamy goodies.
"Thank you Rose."
"No problem. Although I am tired now, so i'm going back to sleep. I'll see you both when you get home from school." I nodded as she left the room before digging into the food she had given me.
--------
I stood at the front door, my thoughts were racing with anxiety. I didn't know anyone at this school, and I didn't have Vins by my side aymore to keep me safe. Granted I knew I could do just as much if not more damage then Vins but I was never much for talking, Vins was.
"What's wrong with you?" Jack asked me.
"Peachy." I said before walking outside. I stood on the porch waiting to see a yellow bus down the road.
"Just so we are clear, I won't get mad if you sit with me, but you are sitting by the window, got it?" I nodded, letting a grin spread over my face after I realized I did know someone here, I knew Jack.
"Hey Jack?"
"Hm?"
"Could you show me where the office is when we get to school?" I asked him. He deeply sighed.
"Fine." I too sighed, but mine was because of relief.
Soon enough the bus showed up and I followed behind him. It felt easy to just blend in behind him. He took a seat and I slid next to him.
"Thank you." I whispered quietly as I stared at the ground. In the corner of my eye I saw him look at me. He continued to stare for a few moments and finally I looked at him. He was staring at me, but almost as though he was trying to figure something out.
"Hm?" I asked him.
"Nothing, I just realized your nose is crooked." I pouted while holding my nose.
