"Now you grab this bit here..."
"You grab the pink thing?" Lucy said with disgust, as her aunt taught her how to milk one of the cows.
"Yes, you grab this here, and you grab this one too, and you pull one down gently, and then the other, and you get milk." Sarah chuckled and Lucy gave her a dirty look.
"Is there no other way?"
"Another way? Do they not teach ya valuable skills when they educate ya now? No, it's the only ways an it's a healthy for the cow too."
"But Aunt Rose, it's disgusting, I'm not doing it."
"Well then, ya a gonna have to live without milk in ya tea then." Rose trotted out the burn leaving Lucy where she is, and beckoned Sarah to follow her.
"Your turn," Lucy whispered.Sarah reluctantly followed her Aunt to the hen house. A tiny hut that could fit thirty chickens, but barely a person.
"We don't have to go in their do we?" She asked, dreading the prospect of crawling through the hole.
"Don't be silly, their are a hatches to collect the eggs, now ya will need this here basket, and you must make sure the hen is outa the hutch before you collect her eggs. She don't wannabe anybody messing with her eggs ya see." Sarah nodded, relieved that she had a better job than Lucy, as if her aunt heard her thoughts, she nodded to the barn.
"It'll be the cow tomorrow," her Aunt showed her how to open the hutch and collect the eggs, "now ya do that one."Sarah tried to turn the lock the same way her aunt did, but was unable to unlock it. "You're turning it the wrong way, you flick it up, up. That's it." She put her hand in the hole and felt a sharp nibble on her finger, withdrawing it quickly.
"Something bit me!"
"You're in a hen hutch, I wonder what it could be," her Aunt said smirking, "shoo her." Sarah put her hands in the hutch and whimpered the word 'shoo' but the hen didn't budge. "Ya got to be firm, let her know ya boss." Her Aunt pushed her out the way and shouted at the hen to shoo, it did. Sarah collected the eggs.
"Here you are Aunt,"
"That's good, but there is another eight and twenty more a hens to collect ya eggs from,"
"All of them!"
"Yep, how'd ya thing I make ma money? Grow it?"
"But Aunt,"
"You girls have a a lot to learn." She trotted away to one of the fields.
