Walking to school together was routine. So was a racing heart and the yearning that came with it.  Tsukishima didn't bother waiting for Yams to go to school because you know, heats. So it did take him aback seeing Yamaguchi outside his house a week after the whole fiasco.

"Tsukiiiii!" Yams almost screeched as he closed the distance between them.

Maybe it was the sun (almost as annoying as hinata), maybe it was all of Tsuki's being wanting things to be easy, maybe it was maybelline, but Tsuki pulled Yamaguchi into a clingy hug that almost screamed desperation if it weren't for the equally unabashed reaction from the softest boy ever.

Tsuki cleared his throat awkwardly as they pulled apart. He could still feel the warmth from Yamaguchi's arms thrown around him so shamelessly and his mind wandered to how warm Yamaguchi would feel with his legs wrapped around his waist too. He zeroed in on the road and tried focusing on Yamaguchi's soft chatter, afraid that he'd pop a semi if he didn't keep his thoughts in check.

Tsukishima enquired after his health and Yamaguchi answered honestly, if not coyly. He tsked at any attempted apologies while Yams kept trying his best to sneak them in in an ever increasingly ridiculous manner.

They got to school and got around the ropes. Tsuki stealing glaces at Yams and Yams sneaking in a glimpse or two. Never at the same time tho. Tsuki wondered if passing notes would be too out of character for him and then decided it would and quickly turned his attention to the green board.

Yams' hair's  green, it shows in the sunlight. Sometimes in particularly brilliant moonlight too but it  could just be me knowing how beautiful it is in all its earthy glory. NO.

Tsuki sighed. He can't be slipping like this. Not for his closest friend.

The one who smells like bakeries on rainy days and is warmer than a comfortable bed in winters. NO.

Before Tsuki could actually focus on school, it was out. Guess he will actually be studying the next time the royals visit him.

They went to practice together. Hinata watched them expectantly when he wasn't focused on kageyama or their game which in itself wasn't a lot but enough to annoy Tsuki. Kageyama more or less brushed over it, completely immersed in the game. A curt nod was all the acknowledgement of that  conversation ever happening and Tsuki was glad for it.

Yams was dotted on by Sugawara and Daichi throughout the practice which oddly put Tsuki at peace which didn't last long due to mild distaste forming at  Tanaka for being overly enthusiastic about everything.

Finally practice was done, not that it made any difference, it'd been ages since Tsuki wasn't distracted. Or to be specific, oddly focused on only one person.

They walked home in comfortable silence, as was routine, reaching Yamaguchi's house first.

Yamaguchi awkwardly toyed with his bag, a faint blush painting his freckles. Unsure of himself but so so so stupidly embarrassed and yet comforted by Tsuki's scent. He spoke. Too softly. Tsuki had to ask him to repeat himself. Which he did and stammered  an invitation towards Tsuki to dinner as a way of expressing his and his family's gratitude. The invite extended to his family too.

"And of course I'm so glad you were there Tsuukii. Ma was glad I had an alpha around to help out and I'm sorry I know I must have made it hard for y-"

Tsuki watched him with increasing frustration as Yams tried gathering words to thank him which turned into a  thing about alphas and omegas so he cut in.

"Yamaguchi we've known each other forever, our families have known each other forever, we've been to festivals and ceremonies together, what the fuck is up with all the formal dining and fuckall! I dont get it! You dont have to host a dinner just because I took you home it's not like its special! I dont it all the time and it doesn't even mean much!"

Tsuki froze in horror.

The words. They were wrong.  He knew it as soon as the words left his mouth. He didnt use words the way they were meant to be used. What he meant was his being alpha didn't mean much. He'd always be there for Yams. It's not special because it's become an instinct, a habit, something ingrained that he could never separate from himself and he couldnt imagine not protecting his precious Yams. So he didn't want the formal dinner because it won't make much difference.

Yet here they stood and he knew he done fucked up when he saw tears filled threaten his heart as Yams tried to not sniffle and failed adorably. No not adorable, heartwrenching.

Angry alpha pheromones were turning to guilty alpha pheromones real quick and they stank heavy in the air while Yamaguchi's subtle scent diminished much like the boy himself. Yams physically tried to make himself smaller, hunching and backing away. Distressed omega scent treated to overpower the angry scent. Almost.  Tsuki tried to release calming pheromones but it only added to Yamaguchi's stress.

Before Tsuki could bring himself to apologize, Yamaguchi hiccuped into a half hearted sound that seemed like a mixture between a whimper and moan.

"Gomen Tsuki" he turned and half ran to the safety of his house, not waiting to hear Tsuki try to form the skeleton of an apology.

"Yams-" he was cut off by the door slamming shut in his face

Tsuki stood there. Like an idiot. Wondering whether this is what it was like to be kageyama, stupid with words and uncoordinated thoughts and behaviour and practically awful social skills. No wonder King was sulky.
