Camila sat nervously in the clinic waiting room the next morning. She knew it was a stupid thing to worry about, but she just felt like the other people there were looking at her.
Her mother sat on her other side, helping to fill out Camila's new patient forms for the doctor. Shawn sat on her other side, and Camila knew exactly how that looked. The only other people in the waiting room were another man and a woman. Camila felt like they were judging her and Shawn, the stupid teenagers who were too dumb to use protection.
She knew it didn't matter, but she just wished they wouldn't look at her.
"Hey, you want a snack?" Shawn whispered, nodding towards the vending machines.
Camila was tempted to quickly say no, but she also knew that this was likely Shawn's way of trying to be helpful to her, considering he couldn't really help with the forms. He didn't know anything about her medical history or insurance.
Camila nodded and Shawn went to the machine to buy her a snack. She looked up, accidentally making eye contact with the wife of the couple. She quickly looked back down, her face flushing as Shawn came back over and proceeded to loudly open the bag of chips.
Camila glared at him and Shawn quickly put the chips in his hoodie pocket. He sat back down and after a moment, Camila saw him typing on his phone.
"It's my mom." He whispered when she looked over. "She's asking how it's going, but I told her we're not in yet."
Camila nodded. Shelby had actually texted her that morning, asking how it went with telling Shawn. Camila wanted to tell her everything, about Shawn's reaction and the way their parents' yelled, but drafting all of that took energy she just didn't have right now.
Camila finished filling out the forms and took them up to the receptionist before sitting back down and waiting to be called back. After a minute, Camila's mother's phone vibrated with a call.
"I have to take this." She told them. "I'll be right back."
Camila nodded as she stepped outside. Her parents ran their own business and Camila knew everything was shifted around so that her mother could be with her today rather than meeting with clients. She felt a slight bit of guilt at that and hoped her father was handling everything on his own.
"Hey, babe, I'm gonna use the bathroom right quick, okay?" Shawn whispered to her. Camila nodded, feeling weird when she was left sitting all alone.
She looked over at the other couple, her heart pounding when the wife smiled at her.
"First visit?" She asked and her husband looked up.
"Um, yes." Camila's voice squeaked.
"Exciting. You're young, so there shouldn't be much to worry about."
"Um, yeah, hopefully."
Camila kept her head down. The nurse came out and called the couple. They went in just as Shawn came back from the bathroom. The sleeves of his hoodie were pushed up, so Camila knew he'd actually washed his hands. Her mother came back a second later.
"Was that Papi? Is everything okay?"
"Just work stuff." She put her hand on Camila's knee. "Don't worry about it."
Shawn yawned, slumping down in his chair and resting his head back on the wall. Camila knew Shawn was the kind of person who didn't like waking up early. He always set his alarm for school until the last possible second, yet this morning, he'd arrived bright and early at her house while she was still getting dressed. She really loved that he was taking everything so seriously, but she also felt bad he was so tired.
