I leaned against the willow, the rough bark gently digging into my back. I sighed, ripping a knife across a piece of wood repeatedly, shaving off thin curls and watching them fall to the grass at my feet.

It was just past midday, the sun casting its warm rays through the bright, flowing leaves. My gaze absentmindedly traced the tree line, following it west all the way to the ocean where the waves lapped lazily against the sandy shore.

     It was so peaceful.

The birds were quietly chirping in the trees, the wild cats and wolves napped in the sun, the cows and sheep grazed in the open fields. Such a beautiful and serene environment.

     It was nice.

     For now.

As the sun began its slow descent, I pushed away from the tree and wandered into waving grasses, carefully weaving around the sleeping animals that dotted the easy terrain. Something had begun to stir within me, an urge, a quiet voice begging to be heard.

     "No, not right now."

     The voice didn't go away.

"It's peaceful though!" I whined quietly, my grip tightening around the hilt of my knife.

*fire, arson, burn, kindling, burn, lava, burn, burn, burn, burn-*

"Shut up!" I yowled, the knife in my hand leaping out of my grasp and burying itself deep in the wood of the pine tree far ahead. I hadn't even realized I'd thrown it until the telltale sound of metal in wood rang in my ears.

The snoozing animals around me looked up with alarm, some scurrying away from my frustrated demonic form.

"Sorry, I- I uhm..." I sprinted lightly over to the tree and pulled out my blade, inspecting it before quickly sheathing it. "Go back to sleep, sorry."

I vanished into the forest and wandered back home, smiling uneasily as I entered my wooden house and reluctantly snatched up my flint and steal.

     "Whatcha doing?"

I yelped in surprise, spinning around and knocking the furnace with my wings. "Joey! Hhhhh-oh by the goddesses you scared me." I took a deep breath and steadied myself. "I'm- uh..."

     *BURN BURN BURN BUR-*

    "Going out."

Joey cocked his head, glancing at the shiny items in my hand. "Gonna starts a fire?"

*YES YES BURN FIRE FIRE BURN-*

    "Hmmmm, probably."

     "Can I come?"

I hesitated, both out of surprise and anxiety. Did he think I was just going to make like, a campfire? Or does he have the same arsonistic urges and tendencies as me?

    "Wraith..?"

"Uh-uh, yeah, sure, why not?" I stuttered, slipping the flint and steal into my pocket and opening a chest behind me to pull out a sizable amount of wood planks and saplings.

"Great! I'll go grab my stuff!" And suddenly he was gone.    Wait... why was he in my house in the first place? I glanced down at my pet fox and smiled at her fluffy, disheveled fur. Oh.

I waited for him outside and was more than a little surprised when he came back with a bucket of lava and a bunch of scaffolding.

     Arsonist it is than.

"Where are we going?" He asked, stuffing the scaffolding into his bag.

I pointed to the north where the open field lay. "That way, there's a huge field across the river where we could relatively safely burn things."

Joey lit up and sprinted off, whipping through the trees at top speed. I followed at a slower pace, my size making it more difficult for me to weave through the forest.

I grinned wildly at the sight I was greeted with. Where there once was a lone willow, now stood a small grove of full grown pines, and towering above was a tower of scaffolding, and a glow.

Joey's purple and white fur glinted in the fading rays of the setting sun, chasing him up the tower as the land bellow was enveloped in shadow.

"Oooooooh~" I skipped into the center of the circle and settled myself on the top of the willow, grinning from ear to ear as I awaited the seemingly glowing furry to release the magma onto the waiting trees.

A sharp, high pitched howl sang from above me and I looked back up, watching as Joey spilled the bucket over the side of the platform he'd built and leapt down, landing on the ground next to the willow with a sickening thud, before miraculously leaping back up and throwing fire at the dark trees.

Moments later, the lava was dripping onto the needles and setting the trees aflame.

     My jaw dropped in awe.

The pines were roaring, the moaning winds whipping the fire into a frenzy. I blew a spark at the untouched trees to my right and yelped with joy as they caught.

Joey leapt up into the willow with me and we shared a look of pure joy and excitement. Our eyes reflected the flames, the trees like torches, ablaze with light.

The voice inside of me was screaming with delight, encouraging the deadly flames as they ate up the creaking, cracking branches.

The night passed in a blink and an eternity, and when the sun peaked above the horizon, the both of us were passed out in the untouched branches of the willow, surrounded by piles of charcoal and ash.

The bright rays of the noonday sun pried me awake, and I attempted to sit up.

     I found I could not.

     My wing was pinned.

I looked to the side to see what was holding me down, and was greeted with a small furry body clinging to me, on my wing.

"Awe!" I muffled my reaction to the adorable sight and gently stroked between his ears, smiling softly.

I felt him nestle further into my side and an affectionate warmth bloomed within me.

The smell of ash and smoke registered and I winced.

     Right.

     Arson.

     Eh, five more minutes.
