Before getting out of the car Dameon reached across to the glovebox. Inside he pulled out a small black derringer. My eyes got wide as he held it out to me. I shook my head hard.

"I've never used a gun before sir."

"Skyler. I wouldn't give this to you unless I thought it was necessary. Please take it just in case." I bit my lip, my hand shaking as I took the small gun from him. He pulled a pocket knife from his middle council putting it in his pocket.

"It won't kill him but it will do some damage. Try to aim for his legs, heart or even better the head. Come on."

Walking from the car we came up the trail that showed an open field, just a bit further from that there was a giant playset. The path went in a circle around the field and spread out to small paths that led into the trees. We looked at each other wondering where to start. We started across the field when my phone pinged for a message. Checking it told us to head to the path to the right once we parked. I showed Dameon he nodded his head as we started to the right path near us.

The path was wide enough for both of us to walk beside each other, the trees around us casted shadows everywhere. I kept jumping at everything when they moved, making the shadows dance. The moon up above gave us enough light through the branches. As we came to the opening in the trees a bridge was in front of us. It rose off the ground above a river, we could hear the sound of it as we approached. I looked down as we crossed the bridge. The water from this river was pitch black. If I remember correctly it led to the lake in the middle of the park. I looked up from the water to see Dameon standing off the bridge waiting for me. I took a couple steps when I heard something thump on the boards behind me. I turned as fast as I could but it happened so fast. One moment my feet were planted on the wooden planks of the bridge the next I felt my whole body propel through the air. I fell hitting the cold water with a scream. Water went up my nose and into my mouth. I exhaled, opening my eyes, the feeling of the current pushing me down. I pushed against it, finally coming up and gasping for air. As I tried to move the water kept dragging me back under. I choked as some water slipped into my mouth. I felt so heavy. My legs and arms were getting tired. When I saw the current had moved me close enough to the bank. I kicked my feet and arms hard making for some long grass falling down into the river.

The current was a little strong as I worked my way finally grabbing onto loose grass along the bank. I coughed trying to clear my lungs. I pulled at the grass testing to see if it would take my weight. It wouldn't, so I felt again, this time I was able to find a loose tree root. I pulled hard feeling no resistance. I tried to throw myself up and pulled at the same time. I was able to get half my body out and finally was able to throw my leg over. I rolled over gasping for air. My clothes clung to me, feeling heavy and restricting as I rolled from my back to my side trying to push myself to my feet. I stood looking around seeing only the trees and hearing the sound of the river behind me. I didn't bother with my phone that was definitely ruined. I started to walk along the river. What happened to Dameon? And what or who had thrown me over the bridge?

I stumbled along the bank, trying my best not to trip over roots and fallen branches. I didn't realize how far the river had taken me. I finally came around the bend of the river seeing the bridge. I ducked down in the shadows trying to make as little noise as possible. Hiding behind a tree I peaked out seeing no one near the bridge. I started off running but felt exposed and in the open. I ran off the bridge heading to the trees again. As I moved my foot fell into a puddle making me slide a bit in the mudd. I cursed looking down. I froze seeing red splattered on my shoes. It was blood. I looked around fearing what I would find. Not too far from me I could make out a large outline. I caught my breath as I walked up. It wasn't a human I breathed a sigh of relief. But holy crap, this thing was enormous. It looked like a dog, it looked to be a mastiff. But I'd never seen a dog this size. The fur didn't look right, it looked almost like it was burnt. The thing's eyes were open with two large red eyes, staring lifeless into the night. I shivered, backing away from it.
