The story of the Marauders is a sad one, especially since we know the fate that lays before them. But it's also one of joy and friendship. One that makes us believe there is such thing as platonic soulmates, that there is such thing as true friends.
For the time being, I'm going to tell the story of happiness. Of the joy.

Lily Evans walked through Platform 9 3/4. She pushed her way through the other witches and wizards, desperate to get onto the train before it left.
"Oi! Evans!" a voice called from behind the redhead.
"Hello, Sirius," she spun around.
Sirius Black, perhaps one of the best-looking students to walk through Hogwarts. Known as a player and heartbreak, he had few close friends. Against popular belief, Lily Evans happened to be one of them. It started back in their second year when he walked in on Lily sobbing over a letter from her sister.
It was a shock for him to see the girl that refused to cry in front of anyone in complete hysterics. He planned to leave her alone, believing she was just stressed about finals coming up. His plans changed when he took notice of a letter clutched tightly in her hands. Knowing what it was like to have a family that despised you, he opted to help her.
"The best way to get revenge is to show their hurtful words mean nothing to you," Sirius had told the green-eyed girl.
From then on, anytime Lily sought comfort after a letter, she'd find Sirius.
This angered Lily's former friend, Severus Snape, who had a rivalry with Sirius and his friends.
Now I, the narrator, say former because last year, after O.W.L. testing, Snape referred to Lily as a slur, a slur berating all those with muggle parents. This, of course, was not the only reason the Gryffindor had stopped being friends with the Slytherin. Despite being in different houses, they had been relatively close, so that wasn't a factor. What was a factor was his obsession with the Dark Arts, and the people he hung around, future Death Eaters.
"How were your holidays?" Sirius asked casually. His curly black hair was in a knot secured by his wand.
"Well, for Christmas, Petunia gave me a wrapping paper tube," Lily shrugged. "And she brought her boyfriend over. He's a nightmare, Sirius."
"Guess they get along fine then," Sirius grinned.
"That's my sister," Lily rolled her eyes.
"She doesn't deserve the title, Lils," Sirius stated. "You and Marlene are closer sisters than you and Petunia."
Petunia Evans, or as she will be called in coming years, Petunia Dursley is a sore topic for Lily. They were close when they were young, but as years went on, Petunia became bitter.
"If we're stating facts," Lily said with a small smirk dancing on her lips. "You and Remus-"
"Flower!" Sirius objected. "You said you wouldn't say anything!"
Remus Lupin was one of Sirius's "friends". As they entered their sixth year, Sirius discovered his "friend" had a major glow up . . .like late puberty hit him like the Hogwarts Express.
It was safe to say Sirius Black is gay.
"I'm just teasing," Lily laughed. "Where's Potter?"
"Your future husband is off saying goodbye to Mum," Sirius waved off. "No need to worry."
Over the Christmas break of the fifth year, Sirius ran away from his blood relatives. He finally had enough of their prejudices. He left in the late of the night before arriving at the Potter's doorstep soaked to the bone in rain.
