Chapter Twenty-Four: Welcome to Cali
Jade stood in my arms openly looking at her pack as she accepted me before them all. I had never been more touched in my life. Here she was (the same mate that always argued with me and disagreed me) taking a stand for me and telling them that she wanted to be with me. She constantly shocked me with her unexpected behavior. She made me feel something that was unlike anything that I had ever come across before. Jade was proving to be a loyal and strong mate to me. Now that she had finally accepted that we were destined to be together and she had gotten that foolish notion of escaping me out of her head.
Her Dad thought he knew everything but he didn't. He didn't know those damn humans as I did. I had had family members killed by their treachery. They would never step foot in this city. If they were someone's mate, then they had better get to marking them and going through the ritual of transitioning to a werewolf, because otherwise they weren't welcome here. They never would be as humans. Humans had their best to destroy my people and me. Their jealousy was the root of it all. They were jealous that they hadn't been chosen to carry the shape shifting ability and all that came with it. Everything was going perfectly fine, until all those centuries ago when the first treacherous human saw one of our kind change into a werewolf. Malik de Salvo had change into a wolf not aware that someone else had been watching him.
That day had marked an important event in history. That was the day that the first line of humans who knew about werewolves came into existence. A group was formed which today is known as hunters. They came into the middle of the damn night and attacked the village in Vienna, Austria. That was where some of us had been located. Women were raped, children captured and rounded up to be killed. Some women were kept for the pleasure of the humans. Others got away. Werewolves had always been on the plane of Eastern Europe. We first originated from the beginnings of Russia. Slowly we migrated and after that attack we moved along the outter reaches of Russia to places like Ukraine, Turkey, Greece, Yugoslavia and many other places. When most people thought of werewolves they thought of those damn American werewolves.
They thought of werewolves who went around with no shirts and flexed their muscles or that damn piece of shit Twilight. What utter nonsense. Werewolves were nothing like that, not even those Americans. Instead, they were loyal and restricted people. We didn’t want to expose ourselves. Besides, to go around Eastern Europe with no shirt on was to freeze to death. It was cold a lot on this end of the world.
Staring at Jade’s father, I rolled my eyes. He was annoying me. He thought he could spread this nonsense to my Jade and that she would leave me. Sure, I didn’t allow humans into Leighton, but really, who could blame me? The destruction and wars that they cause among themselves is enough to make anyone wary of allowing that level of chaos into their atmosphere. They had had two world wars already because of greedy and chaotic men wanted more power and wealthy. I had lived through both of those world wars and I hadn’t once participated. I had refused to. Why should I endanger my people and me, when we could easily just stay in Leighton and continue or own order?
I was glad that Leighton wasn’t visible to the world. It was unknown. What many people called certain areas in Eastern Europe “the middle of nowhere” was actually occupied by the humongous perimeter of Leighton. We were protected by a coven of witches who all happened to be mated to people in my family. As long as they were here no unwanted visitors would be getting in.

I stared at my father. “I think it’s time, Mikhail and I left.”
He sighed. “Dear, we have a situation. Your mother has been snatched by a west coast Alpha. He seems to have it in his mind that she is his long lost mate,” he said in exasperation.
