For decades, many fathers and mothers have struggled to provide for their little ones in their small homes in their home countries. One particular story that didn't make it in the books is the story of my family's valiant journey across the border.
Life in some Mexican households weren't always easygoing, but my family relied on each other for support and satisfaction. However, this did not feel like enough to provide for my older brother and mis tíos, as well as mi mamá. Though they all loved mis abuelos, my mother felt she had to bring my brother into a new, more stable home life in a town in Texas. She brought along her own brothers and her sister-in-law, who did not carry enough funds to properly feed their children. Though my brother had to leave behind his father and a life he adjusted to, my mother promised him fulfillment in this prosperous land on the other side.
Soon, their schedules filled with rigorous labor and overtime despite the struggle of not knowing English. She had to move my brother through multiple homes and schools as she went through job after job. The road to success became a long and tiresome one, but giving up was not on her list. She brought her son here for a better life and she knew she would get it for him no matter what it took.
Through the years, she secured a stable, although low-paying, part-time job at a supermarket where she met her coworker and my father. By then, a new chapter of my family's story began and then came my sister and I. Unfortunately, they both lost their job due to the bankruptcy of the supermarket and they were left to fend for themselves as they raised three kids in a tiny trailer in a crowded neighborhood.
Despite this, neither gave up at searching for new employment and as the years came and went, they were able to provide a much better life for all three children even with all the ups and downs. This goes to show the role of a provider does not simply come in the package of a man, but rather a woman as well.
If it weren't for this woman's resilience, we would most likely still be without hope. To this day, I remain grateful for the opportunities I was able to obtain and the safety net I never wandered the world without.Second entry today!
