Chapter Eleven: surfboard and diabetes

We all ate pizza and went surfing. Gilinsky and I taught Josh how to surf, he got the hang of it pretty quick. We all took a quick break and sat together.

"Josh, I have to show you something." I turned my diabetic bracelet around so they could see the symbol.

"Why are you showing me this? I know that you have diabetes." He replied.

"This is one of the things that you didn't know about me. And so is this." I say and show him I scar on my thigh. He looked at the big scar and asked me what happened.

"When I was little, Angel and I were ice skating and I slipped, well when I fell, the glass cut my leg and I almost died but Angel took his shirt off and tied it around my leg. He picked me up and mom drove us to the hospital, he saved my life. Without him tying his shirt to my leg and quickly reacting, I would have bled to death. I want you guys to know that even the tiniest cut can be a major problem. Especially you Josh."

"Where was I when this happened?!" He asked.

"You were with dad. You were at a tournament, your dance tournament." I said and the guys looked at me with funny faces that made me giggle. Hayes does one that makes us all laugh until we're crying, he crossed his eyes and stuck his tongue out. I couldn't stop laughing until he swept me off my feet and ran into the water. He grabbed our surfboards and we went together. The others took Josh with them and they surfed too. Josh occasionally dunked me under water and pulled pranks on me and I did the same.

Hayes and I found the perfect monster wave, we both wanted for the right time, and went for it. The wave began to break at the end, I was near the end. I was about to jump but I didn't. I stayed with Hayes, I don't want to lose him.

"Hayes, the wave is breaking." I scream.

"Jump." He screams back and I shake my head.

"I'm not leaving you." I yell and grab his hand. I hold tight, especially when the wave pulls me in, the wave pulled us apart and I can't find Hayes. I keep getting yanked under water by the waves, they keep pulling me farther and farther. I try to come up for a breath but only fail. I grab my phone that's in my pink water proof case and try to go above water. I finally do and I call Josh. He answers right away.

"Josh!" I yell but get disconnected by being pulled under again. This time I hit my head on a rock and my head bled. Then, I felt something brush past my foot, I turned around and I brushed past my hand. I saw it, it was a shark, there were three of them. I took off swimming and tried to make it to shore, I half way made it but a shark bit my thigh. I took off swimming and trying to get away with my arms and leg. I made it to shore and began to crawl, I crawled and Matt saw me. He and Josh ran to me and turned me over so they could see my leg and head. The bite wasn't as bad as I thought but it was bleeding bad. Hayes and the guys ran to me too, Hayes ran and dropped right to my side. Josh took his shirt off and knotted it. He told me to bite down on it, I did as he told me to and Matt took his shirt off too. Josh took Matt's shirt and tied it around my thigh, Hayes took his off too, Josh put that on top of Matt's. I was still bleeding bad and Hayes took a towel and tried to stop the bleeding on my head. Gilinsky called 911 and he held my hand, which was weird because Hayes was freaking out and all of the other's were calm and knew what to do, especially Josh.

"Josh." I yelled through the pain and pressure that he was putting on my thigh. He ignored me and still tried to stop the bleeding. I squeezed Gilinsky's hand and Matt ran his fingers through my hair, he tried to keep me calm even though the pain was getting to me.

"Alexis." He repeated softly. His eyes stared deep into mine and he called Hayes to me. Hayes was crying and he looked down at me and kissed me. My thigh bled bad and my head eventually stopped hurting.

The ambulance finally came and got me. Matt, Hayes, and Josh went with me and the other's followed the ambulance. The paramedic hooked me up and put an oxygen mask on my face. He looked at my leg and saw that I had lost a lot of blood.

"Why did she lose so much and why isn't it stopping?" He asked.

"She's diabetic." Josh and Hayes answered at the same time. I went to turn my bracelet around and it wasn't there, the shark must have bit it. I felt my necklace in my phone case and tried to take it out but my hands were too shaky. I dropped the case and past out. Everything went dark and I couldn't hear or move.

Then, I woke in a hospital room. This time I woke myself up and woke trying to catch my breath, I was breathing heavy and I was sweating. A guy was in the hall talking to a nurse but he took off past her and ran to me. He put his hand on my head and a tear rolled down his cheek, he couldn't stop smiling.

"You're awake. I thought you wouldn't wake up. I thought you were gone." I looked at him confused. Who is this man and why is he touching me?

"Who are you?" I asked only to make him upset. Once again I ask him.

"You don't remember me? Alexis, stop playing around, you know who I am- right?" He said thinking that I know him. But I shake my head.

"Am I supposed to know you?" I ask as another tear rolls down his cheek.

"Alexis." He says and his voice cracks and breaks down into sobs. He falls to his knees and cries. Another man runs in.

"Hayes, what's wrong?- you're awake." He says and looks at me, he smiles.

"Who are you?" I ask the man that smiled.

"C'mon Lex, stop playing games. You know it's me, it's Matt, you know me." I'm so confused.

"Who?" Who are these people and why do they think that I'm playing a game?

"Josh, something's wrong with Alexis, she doesn't remember us." Another man ran into the room. He looked like me, we must be related somehow.

"Are we related?" I ask him, he nods and replies,

"I'm your brother. It's me Alexis, it's Josh. Do you remember me? Do you remember what happened?" I thought for a moment.

"I remember being in the water and ice skating. I also remember- you. You were there- your my my brother. Your names Josh. Your my brother!" He smiled and hugged me.

"Oh I'm so glad that you remember me. I missed you so much." He hugged me so tight.

"But who are those other guys?" I ask and he quickly let's go of me.

"You don't know who they are?" He asked me and looked into my eyes. I shook my head.

"Do you know what happened to your leg? Do you remember that?"

"I remember swimming. And trying to get away from something. Everything else is a blur. Why can't I remember?" He looked at my thigh, it was bandaged and I had a scar on my wrist.

"I got this from a knife." I said. I referred to the scar on my wrist. He nodded.

"Yeah, you did. Do you know how?" I shook my head.

"Was I cooking?" He shook his head. A man with black hair walked in with neon paint on his face and hair.

"Hey, just finished the wild life video. How is she?" The guy asked Josh? I looked at him and tried to remember him.

"I know him too!" I yell at Josh. He nodded and smiled.

"What's his name?" I kept thinking as he asked me that.

"Jack? I think, right?" He fist bumped me and I smiled.

"What happened?" He asked.

"She lost her memory." Josh answered.
