I Wasn't Going To Risk It

it's been 5 years since I last saw my family, since the government fucked up, they released this...virus in the rain. I remember the day the rain hit.

my mother was visibly mad that day. we were walking back to the car after she went grocery shopping. it was just me and my little sister with her. she was talking on the phone with someone, I didn't pay much attention to it though.
"y/n get your sister strapped in the car seat," my mom said as she puts her phone down for a split second just to l look at me
"mhm," I take ahold of my sister's hand walking towards the backseat of the car. I open the door and pick her gently, placing her in her car seat.
"I don't want to" she said whining. in one swift motion she pushes the seatbelt away from her completely.
"Fine then, I'm not the one getting in trouble for not having a seatbelt on" I reply, closing the car door and getting in the passenger seat. my mother lets out a frustrated huff as she gets in the car and  turns it on
"y/n? did you put her seatbelt on?" I didn't respond, as she was backing up she didn't seem to notice the car that was right behind her. BOOM! you can hear the sound of the cars colliding
"fuck fuck fuck fuck" my mother whispers as she gets out of the car. I look back to see if my sister was okay. she was fine. I look at The rearview mirror to see my mother in this old guy talking
"I'm so sorry, I didn't see you at all" she places her hand on her forehead rubbing her temples.
"you're gonna have to pay for this" the old guy scolded. making very aggressive hand movements.
"sir... I don't have the money right now"
That's when the rain started to fall, you could see it on the window slowly tapping. The rain starting to get harder within seconds. at first, I thought it was good, we needed the rain. it hasn't rained in a while. all of a sudden this guy and my mother started to violently shake, their eyes roll to the back of their head as their arms went numb. seconds after they start to foam at the mouth. I let out a gasp and instantly went to go open the door to try to save my mother, but it was locked, the front wouldn't open at all. I turned back to look at my sister trying to open the door as well, but for some reason her door worked, she opens the door quickly pushing it with all the power she has, she runs up to our mother placing her hands on her back, letting out slight cries as my mother collapses to the floor. my sisters soon begin to form at the mouth at well.
"what the fuck, what the fuck" my breathing begins to pick up as tears continue to fall down my face. The radio suddenly turns on it was complete static at first. but then you can hear a panicked female voice on the other end
"it's in the rain" and then it cuts to silence

I look back to see my mother and sister, they were completely pale, with bloodshot eyes. at this point I can't even think straight. it was my fault they died, maybe if i actually put my sisters seatbelt on, she would have gotten out. maybe if i listened to my mom a little better, she would have been so stressed.
"it's in the rain"
that sentence repeated over and over and over in my head. I knew my mother got about a week's worth of food in the trunk if I was eating by myself, I needed more, I didn't know how long this would last or when it was going to end. at this point, my brain went into survival mode. I started to think about food and water and basic things to survive. my plan is it going to the grocery store and get a couple of carts full of food that doesn't expire. I was too weak to move, my mother and sister are dead. I put my knees up to my chest and place my face down into them. I ended up falling asleep, I woke up only to realize it's only been five minutes. but it was about to start getting dark, it seem the rain has stopped . so I decided now it would be the best time to go get more food. I climb into the backseat and open the door cautiously. as soon as my 2 feet hit the ground I ran to the store as fast as I could. when I went into the store it was empty there are only a couple of items left. I grabbed all that I could, which was two packs of water, some Twinkies, some potatoes, two bags of rice, and a bag of apples. I put all the items in the cart and ran back to the car. That's when I realize that The keys are still in the ignition, I went to the front of the car and open the door. I pulled the keys out, and made my way back to the trunk. I open the trunk and place all the stuff I got inside. I close it and got into the driver seat
I was only 16 but I have my learner's permit to drive. I was a little scared actually, but I figured that there won't be cars on the road, I take a quick glance outside to look at my surroundings their bodies everywhere. The sun was almost completely gone. I cautiously start the car and start to back up.
"I'm so sorry" I whisper and leave the parking lot to the grocery store. A part of me felt really guilty. they didn't deserve it, if anything I deserved it more.  I get home after about 3 minutes of driving, I get out of the car quickly and put all the groceries in the house, the Power was off so I put all the stuff that needs to be refrigerated in the freezer since it was colder in there right now and it would last longer. by the time I was done putting everything away, it was dark. I take a seat on the couch letting everything skin in for a second. there was banging at the door, I thought it could be my dad, I ran to the door and opened it, I was wrong, so wrong. there is this guy that's been infected by the rain, But he was bloody and making weird noises. he lunged at me and I fell back, I hit my head on the floor pretty hard. I gathered up all the force I had and I pushed him off of me, I picked up one of those coffee tables that were foldable and I pushed him out of the house with it. soon as he stepped outside I close the door on him. I locked it and I placed my back on the door sliding down. I started to cry.

that was 5 years ago, I soon ended up finding out that the people infected by the rain became these types of... cannibals? zombies. they were hungry and would do anything for some food, and of course, not normal food they have to eat human flesh. they couldn't eat others that were infected, so they would go after anyone alive. I'm sure you know about zombies, they are attracted to noise but some were blind or deaf, those types are zombies were easy to get around if you knew what you were doing. Basic enough, if the zombie was blind you just Gotta be quiet, if the zombie was deaf, make as much noise as possible just stay out of sight. I've been alone for those 5 years, but there was this one time where I met someone, it wasn't long before They ended up dying. it was actually kind of sad, finally, I think somebody is going to be there for me, I was wrong. there was also this group of humans that work for the government, I liked to call them 'the takers' that's mostly because if they ever caught someone that was human they would take them to god knows where. I'm sure they ended up dying though, they always had some type of blood on their shirt. theses 'takers' had some advanced technology, they have these little drones that detect heat, they were throwing up in the air and if anyone was in that area they would instantly spot them. they also have this little virtual map I never got close enough to see it through
