Arthur POV
"Alright. I've got this." I stick my hand over the cup and proceed to say an incantation. A thick green liquid bubbles in the mug, and I hear Merlin dramatically gagging behind me. The "drink" was supposed to turn to mead, but the spell obviously didn't work.
"If your so clever, Merlin, why don't you do it?"
"Maybe I will." He comes up beside me and sticks his hand over his cup. He whispers a few words and...no...he couldn't have. "Aha! You were saying?" His mug is filled to the rim with mead. "Aw. Don't be too down on yourself. We don't all have what it takes." He snickers and I sneer at him before he downs the drink in all but three gulps.
"Oi! I want some too!"
"You should've said something earlier. Besides, I did work for it."
"No you didn't! All you did was say an incantation!"
"I know! And it's so much work!" Merlin exaggerated.
"Shut up."
"Oh no! You can't just-"
"Merlin! I'm serious. Shut up." Seeing my distraught look, he immediately goes quiet and listens intently for any intruders. A twig snaps and we both spin around to locate the sound.
"Who's there?" Merlin asks. No answer. Merlin's eyes suddenly flash gold and they longer they stay that way the paler he gets. "Merlin!" I whisper urgently. He suddenly gasps as his eyes fade back to their original blue and his face is grave.
"Run." I don't wait to ask questions and take off, only stopping to grab Merlin's and my bags. We spring for at least a mile before, dodging trees and plants, before we ease to a stop, leaning against a log out of exhaustion.
We're just starting to catch our breath when the sound of horses hooves comes to our attention. The standard capes of red and gold surround us. Merlin holds his hand out in a defensive stance and I draw my sword. The party consists of Leon, Gwaine, Lancelot and Percival.
They look at us, shocked, before their faces burst into a wide grin.
"Merlin! Arthur!" I don't smile back.
"Let us go Leon. We don't want to hurt you."
"What are you talking about? You honestly think we'd turn the two of you in?"
Merlin interrupts before I can answer. "Of course not, its just the last town we were in, the bartender told us that the Knights of Camelot were under orders to arrest us if spotted."
"True," Gwaine smirks. "But then...when do we do what Uther tells us to?"
"Never." Arthur mutters, "you didn't even listen to me." We all laugh, and I finally relax, trusting them. They did, after all, help me escape.
"What are you doing all the way at the border though. If you crossed the line..."
"Searching for you of course. Camelot needs you, mate. We all do. Gwen's distraught. Won't even leave the house half the time. Lost her job you know, anyone close to you did, besides us." They all slide off their horses simultaneously.
"What of Gaius?" Merlin asks anxiously.
Lancelot answers this time, frowning. "He lost his job too. Uther was a bit more sympathetic to him though. Allowed him to stay in the castle, gave him some money, he just doesn't work there anymore. He misses you though Merlin. I've never seen him so lonely." He sighs dejectedly and a stab of guilt enters my chest. It's my fault Merlin's not with him. He's just too loyal to me.
We reminisce and make up for time and over the rest of the day, the Knights tells me stories of what's been happening in Camelot, including a foreign attack that they were desperately trying to fend off. Merlin and I talked about what we've been doing the past couple of months, including a run in with a rather angry bartender and what we plan on doing.
"I was thinking the White Mountains next actually. In Lot's Kingdom you know."
"Interesting choice." Gwaine butts in. "I went there once, became a living popsicle."
"Well, Merlin and I have noticed, the weather hasn't really been affecting us much. The most we've gotten is a slight chill in our travels."
"Ah well. The view was nice all the same. Care to start a fire, cause whether you feel it or not, we're freezing our butts off here." Merlin and I both laugh before Merlin whispers, "Bel onbryne." Conjuring a fire.
"Still up to your magic tricks I see Merlin." Lancelot laughs, warming his hands.
"When am I not." I frown slightly as I watch Merlin laugh with the rest of the Knights. Lancelot knew Merlin had magic before I did? I don't know why, but this revelation really upsets me. He trusted Lancelot enough to tell him, but not me?
Leon suddenly speaks up. "Look guys. I understand we'd all want to stay longer but we really need to head back to Camelot." Everyone, in unison, groans, but they all oblige and start packing up, to make it look like we were never here.
The Knights mount they're horses and after a quick but sad departure, Merlin and I do the same, staring mournfully after them.
"I never thought I would have to miss someone so much." Merlin states.
I look at him curiously for a second before he continues. "Being a warlock...it's not always easy. You know that. You have to keep moving, always looking over your shoulder. Camelot was the first and only real home I've ever really had."
"What about Ealdor?"
"Like I said, I just didn't fit in anymore. I wanted to find somewhere that I did."
"Camelot...Camelot it made you feel like you fit in...didn't it?"
"Yah."
"And I took that option away from you. I took away your home. I-"
"No you didn't Arthur! Destiny took my home away from me! And even if I didn't have a destiny to protect you, I'd still go with you anyway!"
"Merlin! Listen to me! You can still go back! The Knights would make up some cover story for you! I captured you or something."
"Haven't we already had this conversation before? Arthur I used magic to get you out of the castle. I have no idea who saw and I don't care cause I'm not going back. I know for a fact you don't want me to leave. You just want to give me my best chance."
It's true. No matter how much I want to deny it. I need Merlin here, he's the only one who even remotely understands want I'm going through right now. It's been three months since we left, and if I haven't gotten over it by now...I don't think I will ever get over it. I throw my hands up in the air, surrendering.
"Fine. This conversation is over. You're right. I need you here to help me out and to-"
"You need me? Oh strong word Arthur. I think what you meant to say is-"
"I want you here Merlin, alright? I want you here. I can handle everything else, but your my best friend, if I lost you too..."
Merlin mock gasps. "Is the great Arthur Pendragon actually saying what I think he is? You actually care about me?"
"Shut up, Merlin."
"Oh and I actually thought you had changed." Merlin says, putting a hand dramatically to his chest.
We both share a look before bursting out laughing.
