The crickets chirped, and the light of a full moon drifted through my window. I laid in bed, wide awake, despite the time on the clock reading 3:00 am. I needed answers. I needed a dad. And despite my anger at her refusal to teach me, I was determined to get answers, and maybe even my dad.
I decided to visit the only person in the world I felt like talking to; my aunt MIndy. I crawled out of bed, tiptoed down the hall and slipped on my coat and a pair of shoes. I was unlocking the deadbolt when a voice behind me. "You shouldn't do that."
I turned around to see Nana sitting in her favorite chair in the living room. Sighing in defeat, took off my coat and shoes and went to sit across from her on the couch.
"Nana, I need to do something, and my mom won't help me. I need answers. I need to help my dad. I need-" but she cut me off.
"You need to calm down. The CIA is very good at what they do. They wil find your father. Think about it; in order to help him, save him, whatever you have in mind, you would have to go all the way to Madrid. Do you have the money to buy a plane ticket to Madrid?" When I didn't answer, she went on. "You need to let the CIA do their job. Your Aunt can't-" she broke off supressing a smile.
"Aunt Mindy works for the CIA too?" I demanded.
"No," she said, but it was a very bad lie.
"How is she...?" I asked.
"She works with people inside the country. Sometimes she travels outside the country, but not too often. Look. Look at me," she said, pulling my chin towards her with her cold, pale hands. "They lied because they didnt want you to get hurt. Trust me. I did something similar when I was in your mothers shoes."
My eyebrows knitted together in confusion. "What do you mean? About you doing something similar when you were in mom's shoes?" I asked.
"It's nothing dear. Go back up to bed. You can see Mindy tomorow," Nana suggested. I stood, walking to the stairs.
"Nana?" I asked, turning back towards her.
"Yes dear?" she asked.
"Were you a spy, ever?" I asked, fearing the answer.
"Something like that," she replied.
