Colin was having fun. Not the sort of forced fun he thought he might have, but a real, honest fun. Marilyn was fun, dressing up was fun, prom was fun. How was this so much fun? He needed to stop thinking about it. Ok, one more time. Was this really that fun?
Granted, his brain was feeling just a little loose. He had a little to drink. He’d never had anything to drink, but he’d had just a little. Not too much, a reasonable amount. Enough to have fun, and not think too much about the fact that he was actually at the prom he swore he would never go to. That was what people did, right? His parents were drinkers, so he didn’t really know. He figured it was normal enough.
Why did Marilyn look so good? Did she actually like him? She really looked good, especially in that dress. It was like it was made for her. He really thought that maybe he was beginning to like her. There were too many feelings taking up his brain for it to be comfortable.
Prom was whizzing by. Streamers and lights decorated the room in a quasi ‘under the sea’ theme, but like all prom themes, it didn’t really matter at all. Whether it was under the sea or New York, New York or masquerade in the moonlight, the experience was going to be the same.
Marilyn grabbed Colin closer.
“Let’s dance!” she exclaimed, giddy and shining.
“I can do that!,” he lied. In reality, he had never danced a day in his life. It didn’t matter, though. The world was just beginning to fade from his grasp and he was letting it.
