———————————The throne room looked desolate, no sign of life anywhere. The dust piled up like stacks of books. He couldn't believe that long ago, he would've aspired to sit on the now shattered throne. It was his birthright after all. Now that he finally got the chance to rest upon it, he felt a sense of elation that filled any holes that doubt caused.
The servants behind him cowered in fear that their new lord would punish them like he did to the former head of the Ragnvindr family and the former Acting Grandmaster and her cohorts.
With slow careful steps, he spotted the uncleaned remains of the Knights of Favonius. Their bodies spotted the walls, but they could be cleaned up with the right materials.
Savoring his fruits of labor was to be expected for the amount of time he spent in anguish - it wasn't going to be ruined because of a couple of crimson spots on the wall.
As he began to walk towards the dust covered throne, he began to think about his plan.
He played a simple game for several years to even grasp the hope of returning his homeland to its former glory. Each of his pawns fell right into his gloved hands after he had convinced them to trust him. They didn't even know they were being controlled until the very end. Not even his dear brother.Oh, the look of sheer terror and rage Jean's face had once she had found out about his betrayal.
The screams of Diluc's spouse were heard across all of Tevyat as they were dragged away from his headless corpse.
They now laid in a prison, their mind rotting away like their own husband. His heart stung for only a second at the hatred that burned deep in their eyes each time he checked on them.
The same happened with the Deaconess, her resistance to even uttering a tune made some of the soldiers disappointed as they wanted to hear her sing.
Not even the so-called Hero of Mondstadt could save the Knights from their downfall despite being there to witness most of it.
"Under the new nation of Khaenri'ah, all must hail His Highness. Failure to do so will result in immediate death."
The Archon statue was all but gone, replaced with a single reminder of who this land now belonged to. What remained of Mondstadt's population became the citzenry of Khaenri'ah.
A twinge of the heart caused him to stop just short of the throne. Why was that? Was it because of the pride of defeating his enemies?
Was it because of the guilt of seeing the spark go out of Diluc's eyes?
Maybe it was the aftershock of watching Jean beg for mercy for her younger sister as his soldiers took the girl away from her.
Was it the pain of having the Librarian and Outrider witness the execution of Jean Gunhilder?
Perhaps it was the shame of seeing the Outrider dying in front of him - with his refusal to aid her as she took her final breaths in a pool of blood; her death being caused by her own hand.
Or was it simply a strange sickness?
Yes, it must be that, he decided.
He moved once more, finding his place on the throne. It felt good under his fingertips. His legs were crossed with his arms rested on the sides of the throne. A smirk played across his face. His head was tilted to the side ever so slightly.
"Pamper me, my citizens. Pamper me like never before," his voice dripping like syrup, "What are you waiting for?"
The servants quickly sprung into action, handing him all sorts of food. Cups of water and wine were held out, waiting for it to be drank. With a wave of his hand, all the drinks disappears only to be replaced with weaponry of all kinds. The smell of childhood meals wafted in the air. He took a long sniff, trying to embed the aroma into his mind.
"[F/N], my loyal soldier," the spoke once seeing the shadow moving from across the isle. "I see you bring news of the six nations, come now. Tell me."
The shadow moved once again, now coming towards him. Its hood hung low with each step. The servants that surrounded him back off at the sight of the figure. The soldier bowed at his feet. A small moment of time passed between the two before they began to speak.
"Your Highness, I believe that Liyue is considering to wage war on Khaenri'ah. Sumeru is calling a ceasefire while Fontaine is remaining neutral. A Harbinger has been spotted at the border, I think that Snezhnaya is planning something," their voice began to quiver at the mention of Snezhnaya, yet they continued, "Inazuma is surrendering to your troops, and Natlan has sent diplomats to one of the cities near the Liyuean border.
He took a moment to weigh the news that his Captain brought to him. His smile was now gone. It was replaced with a heavy look of distain on his face.
With a heavy sigh, he spoke once again. His arms were crossed against his chest.
"And what of the Traveler?" the silence grew louder as his heart pounded in his ears.
"My King, the Traveler hasn't been seen ever since your victory over Mondstadt. Do you wish for me to send a bounty after the Traveler and the strange fairy?" they asked.
His disappointment could be visible in the moonlight. If you could see both of his eyes, you would see his sapphire eyes shining with a glimpse of grief. The soldier saw this very sight, but remained silent. Ignorance is bliss, they told themselves.
"Nevermind, tell your men to take a break on behalf of the Royal Family. Spoil them a little with the money from Inazuma. Grant me more victories and you might just earn yourself a place as a General. Best of luck, [F/N]." he waved off the knight who was now scrambling to their feet.
Night had sunk the room into a deep darkness with only the moon illuminating on the parts that it hit.
"Understood! All hail His Majesty of Khaenri'ah," they saluted quickly with extreme precsion, their hand quivering slightly. Their gaze locked onto his, a small smirk appearing on his face out of amusement. This was the type of undying loyalty he needed, with you being the beginning. His loyal soldier to the very end - or so he hoped.
You scurried away, presumably to tell your men of the good news you bear from the King.
He sat alone on the throne once again. No one could've prepared him for the amount of bloodshed and the amount of shame he felt. He's always dismissed this as a price to pay for his people. Yet he felt a sickening feeling whenever he thought of himself. It hit him harder than he could ever imagine.
"Father, have I done the right thing?" he asked out loud, the question hanging low in the cool air. Tears were threatening to spill. He knew that he wouldn't get an answer, but he asked anyways. It was too late.
He could feel the stares of the dead. He could feel his heart sink deep into his chest. A groan left his lips as he tried his hardest to make it stop. All it did was continue its rampage on his mind. Each twist and turn only caused more suppressed memories to spill into his mind's eye.
The memory of him celebrating Jean's birthday came to mind. All of the memories he tried to bury under his hatred of the archons resurfaced.
The realization that his time as Kaeya, the Cavarly Captain of the Knights of Favonius was long gone made the feeling even worse. He could hear the laughs of his comrades before the sound was replaced with their screams. Their smiles turning into their scowls and looks of pure terror.
All that remained of him was Kaeya Alberich, King Regent of Khaenri'ah.
Was it worth losing everyone he cherished for power? That, he doesn't have an answer to.
Instead of tears, he let out a crazed laugh. That laugh turned into sobbing as fast as it hit the frigid air.
