Avery jolted awake. She was sitting on a cushiony, white bed. To her left was a blue curtain, and to her right was a beige-colored wall with some chairs. In the distance, she could hear someone murmuring angrily, "Stupid children...literally on a Saturday...overwork. Tch."

Oh. This must be the Wellston infirmary and that must be an angry Darren. Yippee

"Um...Hey. I'm awake." Avery said.

Darren walked over yawning while he rubbed his eyes. He had large eye bags under his droopy, red eyes. "This job gives me absolutely no sleep," he leaned over Avery examining her for injuries. "Any injuries? Headaches, soreness, etc," he muttered, slurring a bit.

"No, I feel fine. I just fainted so no need to worry," she said, smiling, "How long was I out?"

Darren grunted then started trudging away, "Three hours. Aight. I'm done here," he turned around, "Vaughn is outside, waiting for you."

Well, that went well.

She held out both hands and stared at her palms, her lips parting slightly.

What was that!? That vision or dream felt real, REALLY, real. And what happened in the end? So weird...

The words "Lab rat" repeated in her mind. Avery didn't even know what that meant, but she felt disgusted, scared, and broken, almost as if those words had scarred her life. She lifted the sheets and gingerly put her feet into the black Adidas shoes placed on the side. She stood up, wobbled slightly, and walked out the door. Darren was already gone, but instead, Headmaster Vaughn was there, leaning against the wall.

"Ah! You're awake! Did you get a vision? Was it perhaps about your ability? Or your past? Or-" Vaughn bombarded Avery with questions.

"Can we not talk about that?" she interrupted, looking away.

"Pardon?"

"Ok, yes I had a vision about the past. Yes, I got a few answers and a ton of new questions. But I haven't seen the big picture yet. I'm not saying anything until I figure out what's going on. It can get complicated..." Avery said, rushing. She looked down at the blue-tiled floor, "I can tell...Brooke's life was really messed up."

Vaughn nodded slowly and eyed her warily, "If you insist. But this can be a very dangerous situation. Your body vessel's information is practically off-limits so beware, Avery. You must say cautiously of your surroundings at all times."

Avery bowed slightly and looked up at Vaughn. "With all due respect, Headmaster, I believe we should be talking about something else: school on Monday."

This topic about me is too dangerous and unknown to be spoken about. Besides, Monday is just around the corner. Might as well figure out what is going to happen.

"Avery."

"Yes?"

"Activate your ability"

Eh???

"W-what?"

"Yup. Throw out a fireball or some water. Just try to activate your elemental ability."

Avery hesitated and bit her lower lip, but nodded her head, "A-alright." She threw out a fist, but nothing came out. No power flowed through her veins, heck her eyes didn't even glow!

Well, that was pathetic.

Vaughn rubbed his chin, and sighed, "By looking at your aura, I can infer that you were very powerful, possibly level 7.0 to 8.0. You would be great in Wellston! But you don't know how to activate your ability, practically making you a cripple. This could just be a short-term thing or it can last for the rest of the time you are here."

"Thank you for pointing out the obvious, Headmaster," Avery said sarcastically, rolling her eyes, "But I am sure you are aware of the bullying situations and how Wellston is very centered around abilities, levels, and the hierarchy. They will definitely try to force me to talk about my ability."

"Yes...I am well aware. I actually thought about this situation when you were resting. I think it is best to state that you are a low-tier that can not control your ability. Don't worry about the bullying. I will make sure Keene protects you."

"Very good..." Avery said, "After all, if I am less powerful, then I might be able to get along better with John."

"Yes...I will give you your schedule tomorrow at 12:30. We'll meet at your dorm," Vaughn looked out the window. The sky was in a beautiful array of yellow, pink, and orange and the clouds were tainted shades of gold. It was beautiful. "You should get going. It's getting dark."

"Alright, Headmaster see you tomorrow!"

Time skip:

11:00 P.M at night

Setting:

Avery's dorm

Avery POV:

Avery sat at the ivory desk located in the corner of her dorm room. She held a pencil in her left hand as she stared at the mostly blank piece of paper labeled "Plan To Befriend John." Avery's been staring at it for almost a whole hour, yet she is still clueless about what to do. "Ugh! How hard is it to come up with a freaking plan!?" she yelled leaning back into her chair.

Tat. Tat. Tat. BOOM. The door burst open as Evie walked over to the desk, "Are you all right Avery? I thought I heard you screaming."

Avery recoiled, snatching the paper off her desk and ripping it into smithereens. "I was very all right until you came in without knocking on the door!" she retorted.

"A-ah! S-sorry, Avery."

Avery shook her head and sighed. "I'm sorry. This is very unlike me. I really shouldn't have screamed at you," she raised her head and looked at Evie in the eye, "I just have a lot on my mind."

Evie smiled and her gaze softened as she put her hand onto Avery's shoulder. "Don't worry about it! Your frown is making me depressed," she joked. She let go and walked to the door. "It's getting late. You should sleep."

"Thank you, Evie...You really are a good friend."

Author's Note:

I'm so sorry guys!!! I messed up on the first week of my new schedule T^T! My computer died (literally!). It was something about hardware crashing bla, bla, bla, engineer stuff. I'm really, REALLY sorry!

Tbh, this chapter is kind of rushed. I feel like this one was more of a filler. Don't worry! it gets interesting in the next chapter. (First John, Avery interaction) Stay tuned. These first few chapters are mostly talk cuz I want to give off a good base. There will be good action, later on, tho.

Be sure to vote and comment if you liked it :). I'm waiting with open arms for suggestions!
