You were the new kid at school, you know how that goes. Unfair popularity from just being new and the first day is crucial. The first day can affect the rest of your school year, no matter what. Usually, new kids will keep their head down, letting the popular kids lead them through their day no problem, and later on, come out of their shell once they're certain that they could. But you weren't like that, you were always comfortable to state your opinion or just act like yourself 24/7. So the situation you had gotten into was bound to happen one way or another.
"Hey, who's that kid?" You ask at lunch, nodding your head towards a boy sitting alone, about your height. He was skinny with black hair and eyes that were so green, you could see them from a mile away. "Oh...him?" Everyone at the table's mood switched, you could tell they had a history with that boy.
"He's no one," a brown-haired boy responded stuffing some food in his face so that he didn't have to say anymore. You raise an eyebrow and take a sip of your juice, "Oh?" A girl with pigtails puts her hand on the brown-haired boy, "He's not 'no one', he used to be our friend, but then decided that he was too good for us."
You frowned, glancing at the boy again. "How so?" The girl looked at him while telling the story, "We used to hang out together, go skateboarding, but then he'd gotten recognized by many big people. He never had time to hang out and was always surrounded." You scanned the table for a sign of dishonest faces, but you couldn't find a single one.
"So let me get this straight, correct me if I'm wrong," you take a bite of your food, "you're mad that he's 'famous'?...Because all I'm hearing is that other people take up his time and clearly he's lonely at the moment. And it's not even like he's acting any certain type of way too, it's literally just that he's doing his job as a 'celebrity'."
"No, you don't understand, he thinks he's too good for us!" Another person joins in. "Did he ever say that?" You ask, "Just out of curiosity, if it was his choice, would he be sitting here right now?" You wait for an answer but everyone at the table goes silent. "In that case, I don't think he's the one that left you." The students glance at each other not knowing what to say.
"Well, I think I've seen enough of how this little friend group works and I'm just not with it, so if you don't mind, I'll be off." You stand up, taking your lunch tray with you, and walk over to the almost empty table that the boy was sitting at. The boy's eyes light up as you sit down next to him.
"Uh, hi, " you smile. "...Hi, " he responds hesitantly. "Please don't tell me they sent the new kid to mess with me, " he furrows his eyebrows but you could tell he was hoping that wasn't the case. "Oh! No no no, I came here just to talk, honest." He tilts his head. "Oh...you do know that you kind of already threw your reputation down the drain just by sitting with me right?"
You couldn't help but laugh, "Dude, don't be such a downer. I'm Y/n," you hold out your hand to shake. "I'm Miya, " he shakes it. "So, why'd you choose me?" You look up at the cafeteria lights putting your thoughts together, "Well, you looked lonely. And anyway, the rest of them seemed boring, with no discernible personality. They told me about your guy's history and it was totally bogus, you were the victim."
He looks down at his food in silence, it was a sensitive topic for you to bring up, and in realizing that, you automatically changed the subject, kind of.
"So, I heard you like skateboarding, " you smirk. His whole demeanor changed once you said that. His face lit up, he sat up straight and smiled, "Hell yeah I do! I've been skateboarding for a pretty long while, " you listen intuitively, "not to toot my own horn but I'm pretty good at it."
You give him competitive look. "Oh really?" "Yeah really!" "Well, not to toot my own horn, I've been longboarding for a long time and I bet if you gave me a skateboard, I could ride circles around you!" He laughed, "Dude, those are two completely different things!" "I don't think so." "You don't think so? It's a fact!" You both are unaware of how loud you guys were laughing. It was like you two were the only people on the planet.
You'd glance at the table of kids who were staring at you in awe, they tried to look away before you could catch them but were a bit too slow. "How about this, " Miya looks you up and down, "I'll buy a skateboard for you and we'll see if you're all talk." Your eyes go wide, "Wait what? No, you don't have to-" "What's the matter Y/n, chicken?"
You scoff, cross and your arms, "As if, you'll eat those words when I beat you and take all your fame for myself." You chuckle, "I can already see the headlines, " you gesture your hands as if reading the nonexistent story, "'13-YEAR-OLD Y/N L/N BEATS MIYA, whatever your last name is, IN A RACE TAKING ALL OF HIS FAME AND FORTUNES."
He rolls his eyes, "Well slow down there dude, I don't have any fortunes." "Says the one that's going to purchase a whole SKATEBOARD for me, not that I'm complaining, " you joke. "Got me there, " he replies, taking a bite out of his food.
"Hey, Y/n?" he says looking down at his tray. "Hm?" You raise an eyebrow. "Thanks for sitting with me, even if you're risking only having me as a friend. I really appreciate it." "Yeah of course!" you reply, "I'd rather be alone together with someone fun then be surrounded by boring, unfair people."
And just like that, you'd gotten your first companion at a new school. And also ended up busting your ass trying to out-skate Miya, but at least you had a new skateboard and a little bit of social media clout. You win some, you lose some, but in the end, you didn't regret anything.
