iv. vampirism for dummies

"It's going to be okay," Alice breathed. Her eyes were unfocused, and Jasper had one hand lightly under her elbow, guiding her forward as we walked into the rundown cafeteria in a close group.

Emmett led the way, looking ridiculously tall compared to everyone else and taking on the role of Edward's personal bodyguard. Rose looked wary too, but much more irritated than protective.

"Of course it is," Edward grumbled.

Cora could tell he was growing tired of his siblings' behavior.

The mood had been a sudden shift from their normal, even playful morning. It had snowed in the night, and Emmett and Jasper were not above taking advantage of Edward's distraction to bombard him with slush balls; when they got bored with his lack of response, they'd turn on each other, or Alice and Cora, avoiding Rosalie. It was the most human thing she'd done with them since becoming a vampire.

"She's not here yet, but the way she's going to come in...she won't be downwind if we sit in our regular spot."

Alice spoke of Isabella Swan. The girl that seemed to be having this effect on Edward.

"Of course we'll sit in our regular spot. Stop it, Alice," Edward rolled his eyes. "You're getting on my nerves. I'll be absolutely fine."

Alice blinked once as Jasper helped her into her seat, and her eyes finally focused on my face.

"Hmm," she said softly. "How about we change the subject."

"To what?" asked Edward.

But he seemed to accept the idea. As long as it meant he'd no longer be the center of their conversation and worry.

"Cora," she smiled. Cora perked up. She didn't like this change of subject. "She's finally showing the first signs of her abilities."

Edward nodded. Of course, he'd already known this. He'd read all their minds upon returning home. Most of the family seemed to be thinking about these newfound abilities. Some were proud and others worried. Rosalie offered the most worry, which wasn't surprising.
