"I don't know how I feel about this, love," said Sergio. He looked at Jordyn with his piercing black orbs, concerned for his fiancée. He made a promise to himself to protect her from any dangers that came her way. They had only just announced their engagement and she was already leaving.
"I'll be with Nikolai, Serg. Don't worry, we'll be back soon!" She gave Sergio a peck on the cheek and turned to Nikolai, who was guiltily staring at the ground, shifting his weight from side to side.
Sergio inhaled heavily, taking a few seconds to think it over, "Alright," He finally spat, though clearly hesitant, "Just please be careful. You'll keep her safe, right Nikolai?"
Nikolai raised his head and met Sergio's threatening glare. He gulped, "Yes, comrade."
"Excellent," He turned back to Jordyn, "I love you."
"I love you more!"
"I love you most!"
"Awe, babe, stoooooooop," Jordyn whined cutely, hugging her fiancé before following Nikolai to the garage.
He handed her a plane ticket, "Ready to go, your majesty?"
She nodded before realizing the ticket was for a trip to Canada, "Wait... where are we?"
"In Russia," He said, confused by her question.
She shook her head, as if waking up from a dream. Russia? How had she managed to get to Russia? Last she remembered she was in Airdrie. She was beginning to piece things together in her mind, but the events didn't add up.
"Okay. So you mean to say you abducted me from Canada and brought me back all the way here?" Jordyn felt special. They hunted her down specifically.
Nikolai looked away awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck, "Not exactly. You were already in Russia when we found you!"
Jordyn cocked an eyebrow, "What?"
"We initially kidnapped you because we thought you were royalty all dressed up like that. After we did a background check on you, well, we found out the truth," Nikolai admitted, ashamed.
"Oh.. well that's awkward," She pursed her lips, looking around the room. Then she came to the realization, "Wait a minute, that means I'm free to leave, right? Since I have no political connections or anything?"
"Technically, yes. But there are still ways to spread information to the authorities even if you don't know them personally," Nikolai argued. He felt bad keeping Jordyn stowed away with the mafia, but there wasn't anything he could do about it.
"But what if I pinky promise not to tell?"
"I mean, something in writing would probably work better, but yes, that would work!"
Jordyn hollered with excitement. She had regained her freedom by negotiating with the mafia. She felt powerful.
"But if you knew I wasn't royalty before I met Sergio, how come he told me I couldn't leave?" She asked, genuinely curious.
"You see, Sergio has always had trust issues. He can't help himself. He only told you that because he was afraid you would try to escape the first second you got," Nikolai explained, walking towards a mysterious black van in the garage.
"So he lied to me? Ugh, that's annoying," Jordyn rolled her eyes far back into her head. How could she be marrying someone who had kept such a big secret from her?
"I promise you his intentions were good," He assured.
"HE WAS TRYING TO KEEP ME HERE AGAINST MY WILL!" She screamed, frustratedly.
"Still... he didn't mean to hurt you," Nikolai said, quieter this time. It was clear that he had an undying loyalty to Sergio. At least Jordyn knew she could keep him alive after her plan to blow up the traitors went through. She trusted him.
They reached a black van with dark tinted windows. Nikolai opened the passenger door for Jordyn before running around to the driver's side. He hopped into the seat, inserted the key, and started the engine. It started with a dangerous growl that slowly turned into a soft hum.
Nikolai sighed, glancing at Jordyn before staring down at his feet. Jordyn stared straight out the window, the gears in her brain turning faster than ever. The two sat in awkward silence, listening to that low hum of the motor. Jordyn had nothing to say. This new information gave her a rush of so many different emotions that she didn't know which one to feel. She brought her hands to her face, massaging her temples to relax. This would be a long trip.
He began to drive, leaving the garage and following the streets down an unpaved backroad through the gorgeous Russian countryside. There was nothing but golden fields and the occasional patches of red sand where potatoes grew. It was peaceful. The sun was beginning to set, casting shades of bright pink and orange into the clouds. The mixture of colours was breathtaking, almost as if it had been painted in the sky. Nikolai relaxed his tense shoulders and exhaled, feeling calmed by his surroundings. He was easily panicked and in a constant state of stress. But this was nice. Everything felt so warm and welcoming. Well, almost everything.
Nikolai noticed Jordyn was suspiciously observing their route. She had a cold, hard glare that took away from the serenity of the scene. "It's better to take the backroads so that we aren't tracked by anyone or pulled over," He chirped, nervously.
Jordyn nodded stiffly, "I see."
Within minutes, they had arrived. Jordyn's confusion grew.
"This doesn't look like an airport."
They pulled into a giant patch of concrete, like a football-field-sized parking lot. It was hidden away behind tall bushes and other plants. Jordyn didn't know who would be able to remember where this place was out in the middle of nowhere.
"It's not the type of airport you're used to, your majesty," Nikolai explained as he exited the car. He walked around and opened Jordyn's side before continuing, "It's a private landing zone."
"But where are the planes?" She asked, looking around the open area.
Nikolai didn't answer. Instead, he walked into the middle of the lot, and yelled, "секретный пароль."
Jordyn was shocked. She had never heard Nikolai raise his voice. His meek demeanour made her believe he didn't have the lung capacity to even project his voice.
Suddenly, a strip of the concrete lowered, creaking loudly as it created a pathway down into some kind of underground lair. A rattling sound came from the dark den, and out came a small plane, piloted by a man wearing an all-leather pilot's suit and tinted visor covering his eyes.
Nikolai turned to Jordyn, "Ready?"
She smiled. "Absolutely."
