The following day, I was all but dragged to family dinner. My mother, who suddenly had a car seat securely in the backseat of her car, showed up at my apartment at 11:00 am and made me go help her get dinner ready.
"Ava, baby," I said, walking into the apartment with my mother right behind me. I'd met her at the door and left Ava in the living room with her coloring.
"We're going to have dinner at Grandma and Clay's house," I said.
"She can call him grandpa," my mother said.
"I don't call him Dad," I said. "My father, her grandfather is dead. Clay tolerated me at best and you know it."
"Mama," Ava said, gaining my attention. "Can I still color?"
"How about you pack a bag with one color book, one regular book, and one toy?" I suggested. She nodded and ran to her room to grab a bag. She returned with her bag, shoving her coloring book and a box of crayons into it. She held a stuffed corgi in one hand and her bag in her other.
"Chaussures(shoes)," I said. Ava ran off and slid some sandals on as I grabbed my purse and shoved my prepaid into it. I needed to get a more permanent phone but for now the landline will do.
I stepped into some sandals of my own and picked Ava up so we could head out.
When we arrived at my mother's house, Ava was instantly complaining she was hungry.
"What does she like?" My mother asked.
"Apples," I said.
My mom nodded and pointed to the basket on the counter. I grabbed one and a bowl before finding a knife to cut it up with. Ava was standing near me, clinging tightly to her stuffed corgi. I worked quickly and cut the fruit, taking her to sit down at the table and eat it where I could still talk to my mother.
We talked and caught up as she worked on making dessert first.
"Mama," Ava said about halfway through her apple. "I want a nap."
"Do you want to finish your apple?" I asked, taking a piece and popping it into my mouth.
"Mama can have it," she said, cuddling into my chest.
"Mama has to help Grandma," I said.
"Hold me," she said as the door opened. A group of guys walked in. Tig, Jax, Opie, and Clay.
"Hi," I said, smiling at Tig. He walked over and kissed my lips as he sat down with me.
Jax and Opie were standing near by talking about something.
"Opie, when did you get married?" I asked suddenly as I noticed the ring on his left hand.
"A year ago," he said. "I sent you like three invitations. When you never RSVPed I figured that you didn't want to come."
I stood up with Ava still in my arms and walked over to him.
"No, you know how much you mean to me. I never got your invitations. I'm so sorry," I said. I started thinking about it and instantly knew exactly what happened to the invitations.
"What's wrong?" Jax asked as I took a deep breath.
"That a-hole threw the invites out before I saw them. I'm so sorry Ope," I said.
"It's okay Sammy," he said, hugging me tightly. I just nodded in response.
"Yay we were all sappy and emotional. Now I need help in the kitchen," Gemma said walking towards us.
"I guess she means me," I said.
"Here," Opie said, taking Ava from me so I could go help Gemma.
As the day passed, the guys all took their turns with Ava. For the most part she was good about communicating in English. Sometimes she would forget a word or something and just use the French one instead but the guys just went along with it.
Later on when Bobby and Chibs showed up with Kyle and a couple others, Bobby offered to read to Ava. She grabbed her book from her bag and he laughed nervously.
"I don't know these words," Bobby said looking between me and Ava.
"There's kids books in the boys old play room," Gemma said. Right, the play room had belonged exclusively to my younger brothers because from the second I could walk I was forced to do housework and learn to be an old lady.
Luckily the rest of the day passed quickly and before long Ava and I were at home and in bed for the night.
