Where am I? I feel like I've seen this place before. Then it hit me like a bucket of ice water on a hot summer day. I was in the woods, again. I could see the familiar smoke puffing out of our chimney in the sky. I wasn't that far from the house, which I already knew. I looked up at the house, at my family standing on the porch calling my name.
"Maria? Maria it's time to come in." I heard my mom call from the porch that seemed so far away from the spot I stood just twenty feet away. Why is this all so familiar? Why do I have this huge feeling of déjà vu? I took a step forward as my little brother Thomas stood on his tiptoes and yelled my name.
"Maria! Come in, it's getting dark." He looked sad, and scared. He was only 7. as I stepped forward my boots crunched on some dead leaves reminding me that it was mid October, and that I was still in the woods. Just as I lifted my right foot to take another step I heard a low growl come from behind me.I slowly turned and as I did it all came rushing back. The fight. The yelling. The running. The gunshot. And now....the wolves. I turned around and came face-to-face with one of the fowl creatures. Teeth bared, back arched, the faint growl so low only I could hear it from being so close. My breathing stopped and my heart skipped a beat. I knew what came next but it's what happens after that I can never grasp. I opened my mouth to scream knowing nothing would come out but I still had to try. I glanced back at my house to see if my mother and Thomas had heard anything but they had gone inside, leaving me alone with the wolves. I broke into a run I knew I wouldn't win. I knew what my fate was, but I had to try didn't I?
I ran and ran hearing the crunches of leaves and branches below my feet, but not just my feet but also from the paws of the four wolves coming straight for me growling and barking. I ran onto my porch and tried opening the door knowing it wouldn't open cause it's always locked, but this time I got through. I busted through the door running straight for the kitchen where I knew my mom would be knowing the wolves were hot on my trail. Then I remembered I hadn't shut the door. Shit. They could get Thomas. I heard him playing in the living room so I bolted there instead forgetting all about the kitchen. "Thomas!" I shouted as I ran into the living room finding my brother lying in a pool of his own blood on the floor with one of the wolves standing above him, with Thomas's blood dripping from his jaw. I turned and ran back to the kitchen, tears streaming down my face. I got to the kitchen in time to see a wolf slowly crawling towards my mom. I ran and wrapped my arms around her but she disappeared and I fell to the floor and I heard a crunch beneath me. I was back in the woods.
This is impossible I thought as I slowly stood up and looked towards the house. It was dead silent, and I closed my eyes as I heard the low growl behind me once more. I knew what happened next. I opened my mouth to scream knowing as always no sound would come out as I turned an opened my eyes in time to see the wolves jump on me and tear me limb from limb.
And then.....i opened my eyes.
