I woke up the next morning to an abrupt banging on my bedroom door. I got up quickly and walked over to my door, the banging stopped. I opened it slowly to find Thomas on the floor in front of it.
"Mommy! Maria's awake, can we have pancakes now?" He yelled as he stood up, running into the kitchen.
"Well of course Thomas, that's what we were waiting for." I heard my mom say to him in the kitchen, she sounded happy. Wait, she just told me yesterday that Thomas was dead. If he was dead how could she be talking to him? I walked out into the kitchen to see mom and Thomas making pancakes. I looked over at the table, there were only three places set for breakfast. That's when it hit me, where's dad? He wasn't in his chair reading his sunday morning paper like he always was. I glanced back over at the kitchen to see my mom facing me with a gun in her hands, shocked and confused I started to back up into the living room but she followed.
"Maria, you've always been such a nuisance." She said smiling while continuing to walk towards me.
"I told your father that there was something odd about you but he didn't believe me, but when I found this on your dresser this morning." She held up my necklace with both wolves hanging in the air. I instinctively reached up to my neck, knowing that it wasn't there but I couldn't help it.
"I knew there was something wrong. I only saw one wolf when you first got this necklace, but now there's two." She threw it on the floor and smashed the charms with her foot. I stood there looking like an idiot with my mouth hanging open as I watched the pieces fall from her shoe. I looked around and noticed Thomas was gone. As I turned and looked back at my mom she was crying.
"I'm sorry Maria, but we can't have a freak in our family." She whispered as she pulled the trigger and everything went black.

I woke up screaming and then saw where I was and immediately stopped. I was in my English class and everyone's eyes were on me. I looked around the room and noticed that even the teacher had stopped talking and had come over to my desk, touching my shoulder asking if I was alright. I looked up at her, she looked very concerned.
"Maria." She said in a hushed tone that only I could hear. "Is this about your family's death? Are you still not fully over that? Would you like to go to the guidance office, to talk to them about it?" She asked me thinking that I needed help. I looked at her like she was insane. Since my family's death? What on earth was she talking about, my family was alive. Weren't they? I slowly stood up and walked out of the classroom still looking at her like she was crazy, but when I walked out of the room, with my books in my hand I heard a crunching sound. I closed my eyes, the fucking woods again. I opened my eyes again, I was still in the school, then what had I stepped on? I looked down under my foot and realised I'd stepped on a pair of glasses. I don't wear glasses, no one in my family wears glasses. I looked around the hallway but there was no one there. I felt a tap on my shoulder.
"Excuse me Maria, but I think you just stepped on my glasses." I turned around and saw Andrew Thompson standing behind me looking flustered.
"Oh I'm sorry Andrew, I didn't see them, why were they on the floor in the first place?" I asked him confused. His eyebrows kind of knitted together in confusion also.
"You came out of that classroom so fast you hit me with the door and my glasses fell off. It's not like I put them there for you to step on." He said sounding a little annoyed. I hit him? Oh my gosh I wasn't even paying attention. I bit my lip and bent down to pick up what was left of his glasses, I handed them to Andrew.
"I'm so sorry I should've been paying attention. I was just upset cause my teacher just asked me if I was screaming because I wasn't over my parents death. That's crazy right? I mean they're still alive." I said laughing softly trying to see if I wasn't the one going crazy. He pulled out his phone and went to an article online.
"Your last name is Jones right?' He asked me.
"Umm yes?" I said confused.
"Well it says here that 'Catherine Jones, Harold Jones and Thomas Jones were all killed in a car crash last month, only Maria Jones survived, walking away with nothing but a few scrapes and bruises.' " He said reading from the article on his phone. I took it and read every word he had just told me. What? Were they really gone? I felt tears fall down my cheeks and a hand on my shoulder.
"Maria, I know it's hard but you will get through this. I know you will." Andrew said as he slowly took his phone back and put it in his pocket.
"How do you know? You don't even know me! They are not dead! I just saw them this morning. They can't be dead!" I yelled at him as I wiped away my tears and ran down the hallway and ran straight out of the door of the school.

I didn't know where I was going and I don't really care. As I ran I had my eyes closed trying to stop the tears from flowing, but I also heard crunching underneath my feet. The crunching got louder and louder and I stopped running. I looked around me, I was in the woods begin my house, I even saw the smoke rising out of the chimney. They had to be here. I ran into my house and almost ran straight into my mom, she stepped back with her hand on her heart, startled.
"Mom, you're here." I said smiling. I knew they were wrong. I knew my family was still here.
"Well of course I am, it is my house you know." She said smiling slightly. "You look happy, how was school? I thought it ended at 3?" She asked me looking at her watch, I glanced at the clock behind her 1:34pm shit. School wasn't over yet, I just ran out.
"I forgot my homework or fourth period, they said I could run home and grab it." I said hoping she would believe me. She looked at me with a sad smile.
"Maria, is this about your father and Thomas's death? You know I didn't mean it. You know it wasn't me holding that gun don't you?" She asked me while stepping closer. What? She killed dad and Thomas? When? Why is everyone I love apparently dying? She was still waiting for a response and I guess I took to long to answer, she was starting to get impatient.
"Of course mom." I said trying to force a smile, but I don't think she believed me.
"Liar! You're just like your father. I should've shot you when I had the chance. I never believed you were like the rest of us. You were always so different." Her eyes drifted down to my necklace and my mind flashed back to images of her crushing it with her foot. I instinctively put my hand over it. She looked back up at me with her lips in a tight line.
"Maria, I thought I spared your life cause you would be on my side." She said sounding sad, she reached forward and touched my cheek. I flinched back, her hand was ice cold and covered in something black. She frowned as I flinched and slapped me across the face. I held my cheek, while I looked at her shocked.
"Don't make me change my mind or you'll end up like Thomas and your father." She said walking away for me, laughing like a maniac, as she walked away I looked around the house and everything started to fade. I was in the woods again. My mother and her laughter were long gone.

It was just me and the wolves.
