Over the next few months, Carlisle's philosophy was born and he found himself again. He started making better use of his time. He studied at night and planned by day. He swam to France and continued on to Europe to the good universities there.
Over there by night he had started to study music, science and medicine and he found his caling, his penance, in that and in saving human lives. It took him 2 centuries of torturous effort to perfect his self control. Now, he is immune to the scent of human blood.
He is now able to do work he loves without agony. In fact, he finds a great deal of peace at the hospital. He was studying in Italy when he discovered the others there. They were much more educated and civilized than the monsters of the London sewers.
He stayed with them for a short time, a few decades. He greately admired their civility and refinement. He decided to try for the New World after a while. He dreamed of finding others like him as wanted companionship.
He found that he was able to inetract with unsuspecting humans. He started practicing Medicine but the companionship he craved evaded him. He'd been turning over an idea in his mind for several years and almost decided to act.
