Chapter 16: Hot Water
Finn's POV
They say that blood is thicker than water. And I've always stood by that. I've always thought that no love was ever a match from the love that your family provides you. Or so I thought.
Every single day ever since the first night I heard my mom and dad arguing that week, very early hours in the morning, I would always hear something break somewhere in the house and then arguments, each getting louder day by day.
"You have no empathy!"
"And you can't realize he's just milking you for money! He never loved you!"
"You don't know anything, Rick! You weren't me when we were together, you weren't the one when he'd always tell me that he loved-"
"I don't wanna hear that again!"
*SLAP*
And then the next night would be the same, just different topic to fight about.
"Lower your voice, you're gonna wake up Finn!"
"I only will if you stop seeing that damned asshole!"
"I'm not your possession, I can go wherever I want!"
"Not near that criminal-"
*SLAP*
"I'm not gonna let you disrespect him!"
And then a glass would usually shatter.
It went like that for four days straight. Until this very particular night it went differently.
"Rick, stop it!" I heard my mom yell and then a door slammed close which made me jump. My heart was beating so fast. I was scared. I didn't know what my mom or dad could do to each other.
I forced my eyes shut but the tears in them managed to reach my tear duct. Everything was quiet which brought some peace to me but it didn't last long.
"If you're so adamant about what you want to do. Then get out of my house. OUT!"
My dad's deep voice was on full blast right now. He didn't even try to suppress it like they would always do. It's like he's on his breaking point. I then realized what he just said which made me stand up.
I walked down the stairs just as my dad drop a bag on the door with my mom outside, her face morphed in scowl but I could see the tears streaming down her face which broke my heart to pieces. It was a sight I never wish to recall.
"Come back when you've actually used your brain." My dad said before slamming the door shut.
I watched as my dad slumped against the wall beside the door, tears streaming down his face and his expression hurt. Once he opened his eyes, he noticed me standing nearby which made him stand up in a hurry.
"Finn... What are you doing still awake? Y-You have school tomorrow." He said, hurriedly wiping his face with the sleeve of his shirt as he forced himself to smile... like everything was fine.
I couldn't help but let the tears from my eyes fall down. My dad was the type of man who would want to be the stronger one, he was the kind of man who wanted to take care of everyone instead of being the one taken care of. But there's only so much one person could handle. I've never seen him so vulnerable, hell, I've never seen him cry.
"I heard you two every night." I said.
His smile slowly faded before more tears spewed from his face. "I..." He tried to form a word but he couldn't.
