I backed away from the door, wide-eyed and shocked. My heart was beating quicker and my mind was racing.
What happened to Sarah, I kept asking myself. What happened? What happened?
A hard thud suddenly broke the moment of silence. Then another, and another. It was coming from Sarah's room. Whatever she had become, it must be hitting the door, trying to break it down.
In a matter of minutes, the door split in the middle and a chunk came flying out at me. I jumped back and out of its way, trying to ignore the glowing eyes looking at me from within the door. I kept moving back, but I could still hear the high pitched screams that the creature was producing.
I knew I should leave, I should just get into my car and drive away. Surly whatever this thing was, it couldn't keep up with a moving vehicle. But the more I thought about it, I knew I couldn't. This was my sister, or some creature that once was. I couldn't just leave her here.
But what could I do? How do I help Sarah? She's obviously sick and needs help, but it's not like I could just drive her to the hospital. And she's hostile and dangerous. What could I do?
All this was running through my head as I was backing away from the door that was doing a bad job at keeping the creature inside. It wasn't long before the whole door was knocked down and the creature came barrelling through the doorway. I gave a yelp of surprise, turned around and began to full on run out of the building that once belonged to my sister and her boyfriend.
I didn't even make it to the living room before the creature caught up to me. I could hear it behind me, each loud scream getting closer than the first. I tried to control my breathing as I ran, but that turned out to be very hard to do when you're being chased by some horrible creature. My skin crawled as I could hear the footsteps and shrieks of the beast right behind me, and I knew in a matter of seconds it would have me.
I leapt to the side and into the living room as the creature went barrelling beside me. It had too much momentum and knocked over a lamp. The creature tumbled backwards and over the couch, screaming it's shrill scream. I didn't stick around to see it get back up as I took off in the other direction.
Back through the kitchen and back into the hall, I ran, not too sure of where I was going. Panic took over and soon I was back at Sarah's room, staring down at the broken door. A high pitched shriek filled the air and I ran into her room, searching for something to defend myself with.
Another scream cried out and I started to sweat, rushing around the room. What would my sister have in here that could be useful? An alarm clock, a hairbrush, a watch, a pair of slippers. Nothing that could help me.
Think! I told myself. Think! What would be in here? It's Sarah and Joseph's room.
As I was thinking and searching, I almost tripped over an opened crate sitting near the closet. I looked inside and saw that all that was there was some jewellery that Joseph's mother bought for Sarah. Joseph's parents are always buying Sarah things from all the countries they travel to. They had to ship it back here in a crate, for whatever reason. I pushed the crate to the side and thought harder as another shrill yell cried out, this time closer.
Ugh, what could be useful in this bedroom? Think, think, think!
Wait, crate?
I frantically moved the crate to the side and found what I was looking for. A crowbar. There's no way Sarah and Joseph could've opened this without a crowbar. A grin crossed my face as I tested the metal stick's weight. Now this is a weapon.
More screaming filled my ears and I could hear footsteps. I turned around and walked cautiously over to the door. I peered down the hallway and sighed when I saw no pale creature at the end of it. That could be a bad thing though, since I don't know where it is. It'd be better if it came to me. There's only one way that it could come at me from, so that's an advantage. With that in mind, I started yelling for it.
"Hey!" I shouted at the top of my lungs. "Hey, glowing eyes thing! I'm over here!" The screams stopped for a moment, but the footsteps sped up. Soon, the creature ran around the corner and into view. It snarled at me and I raised my weapon.
"Come at me!" It began to run full speed towards me and started it's annoying shrieks again. I took a deep breath as I felt my heartbeat quicken. As soon as I had done that, the creature was upon me. It raised its arms in the air and was ready to strike me down, but I was ready too. I readied the crowbar and took a swing with the hooked end.
It hit the creature on the shoulder and across the chest, knocking it backwards. It stopped yelling and gave a surprised shout. It hit the ground, then tried to get back up. Before I could think twice about it, I raised the crowbar once again and swung back down. This time it hit the yellow eyed beast on the head. I cringed at the sickening sound it made and looked away as the things head snapped to the side and ripped away from the neck.
The creature went silent and I shut my eyes, trying not to think about what it looked like. The crowbar was dripping with blood and I dropped it before it could drip onto my hands. I was breathing hard and turned away from the creatures body on the floor. I leaned against the wall and tried to catch my breath. It proved to be harder than expected.
Oh, God. I thought. Did I just...kill Sarah?
No, it wasn't Sarah. It was whatever she had become. But, what had she become?
