"Hello?" Maia said into the phone, as she looked around her messy room with tired eyes. Her gaze paused on her bed, and a look of longing flooded her features. She hadn't slept properly in days.
"Hi. Uh, I have a feeling this isn't the pizza shop.." Said a soft, soothing voice on the other end.
Maia let out a sigh of frustration. This wasn't the first time someone had called her instead of the pizza shop, and she was beginning to get frustrated.
"No, it's not." She said, a little more harsh than she expected. She immediately apologised in her head.
"Look, I'm really sorry to bother you. I just.. Really want some pizza."
Maia smiled. "How do you have your pizza, anyway?"
"Just load it with heaps of cheese, and I'll take anything." Maia heard her giggle on the other end of the line.
"Oh, my gosh. You have the cutest laugh!" Maia commented, quite excitedly.
"Thanks, I get complimented on my laugh a lot." The other girl's smile could be heard through the telephone.
Maia wondered if she was genuinely happy or just faking it. She sounded pretty not-sad to Maia.
If not-sad is even a word, Maia thought to herself.
"What's your name?" Maia asked politely.
"My name's Mali-Koa. But everyone just calls me Mali."
"That's one of the prettiest names I've ever heard. Ever. And I'm not even joking. Mine's Maia, by the way."
"You know, that reminds me of a book series I've read." Mali-Koa spoke in a light tone.
And then, for the first time in a long time, Maia Jacobs laughed; a true, genuine laugh.
"Yeah."
