"Doe she know?" Can asked, an apprehensive gaze pinned on his friend as he shoved the envelope in his pocket.
"No, not yet. My contact at the lab pulled a few strings for me to speed up the process but at the same time, no other copies have been released."
"How long do I have?"
"I don't know, but it just a matter of time."
Can let out a sigh, even though his relief was temporary. "Alright, I'm not in the right headspace for this right now. I just need a few days to process everything."
"Aren't you at least curious? I don't know have you haven't torn that envelope to shreds yet."
"Believe me, it's not that simple," he said, his gaze pinned on the house in the distance. "I was hoping Sanem and I had made some headway by now, but no such luck. I don't think whatever is in this envelope is likely to hel[ the process along."
"Okay, I get it...but, knowing sooner than later would be beneficial."
"I know, just don't want to hurt Sanem anymore than I have. If it means I can save her even a second of hurt, I'll wait it out."
Metin nodded and lifted his beer as a sign of solidarity, Can assumed. "I'm with you, Brother. Let me know what I can do to help."
"I need to tell you something. I don't want you to be blindsided in case it comes up."
Metin paused and gave him a serious look. "And what is that?"
"I ended up at her place, around the time Sanem went missing."
"Divit, you're killing me. You know you're not supposed to have contact, right?"
"I know...I know. Probably not my brightest moment, but it happened."
"What happened, exactly?"
Can gave a noncommittal shrug. "She extorted me."
"Did you threaten her in any way? Is there any chance she recorded the conversation or got you on video?"
"No, I doubt it. She wasn't expecting me and our exchange lasted all of five minutes if that long."
"What did she want?" Metin asked, his voice low. "Was it money?"
"Of course I didn't threaten here, what do you think I am?" He shot his friend a disdained look."She asked for money, but honestly, I can't say that she doesn't want something else," Can replied with a shake of the head and then sighed deeply before continuing to explain what had transpired that day in detail ...
"You've got to be more careful, Can. At least until the trial ends."
"I get it, but I didn't have a choice."
"You had a choice, my friend. There's always a choice." Metin paused for a moment of reflective thought then made his way to the door with a frustrated groan. "There will be no video or audio of this conversation because there was never any meeting," he said after a few minutes.
Can gave him a confused look.
"Nevermind, I'll take care of everything. Keeps this between me and you."
Can nodded, his gaze shifted to the flames in the fire pit. "Between us it where it stays," he agreed. "Thank you, Metin...thank you for everything."
Can stared off into the distance, watching as Metin's car disappeared into the night.
He was going to have one hell of explaining the random visit in the middle of the night to Sanem. He could only hope that Metin would keep his word and not mention anything about the conversation they just had, but he knew better than anyone how quickly things can change ...at the end of the day, the only person he trusted besides Sanem, was himself.
