CHERRY GARCIA!

adored human beings.

Every single thing about them, she loved. Every part of their existence had always been adored by her. Humans often did things that made sense to nobody except themselves. They were full of love and wonder, and she found that beautiful.

Constellations were purely man-made. Humans managed to look up into the stars and makeup stories. They held hands as a form of comfort, cried when others cried, yawned when others yawned, and laughed when others laughed.

She knew that humans weren't all good all the time. No mortal was all good all the time, it wasn't possible. Some bad didn't erase every bit of good. One person didn't determine an entire population.

It made sense that Cherry would love them because she was the goddess of human nature.

Even if she wasn't, she still would've loved them. She had loved them when she wasn't a goddess, when she'd only been a demigod who lived with eternal fear.

From the moment of her birth, the girl had been consumed by such a deep paranoia of screwing up, that she'd made every choice with such calculation that it was frightening.

If kindness could've been balled up and personified, it was her. She'd put others above herself and loved as easy as breathing. An odd sort of love lived inside of her, a gift from her mother, Aphrodite, and this influenced every ounce of her being.

If there was ever an argument for humanity being good, Cherry was the evidence. She was kind to all. She'd never even killed an insect. Unfortunately, no good deed went unpunished.

The girl died at the age of twelve years old, saving a drowning child, which had only ended with her drowning. It wasn't fair, Aphrodite thought, that her child could be good all the time and not be rewarded in return.

Cherry had been a protector in life and was made into the protector of humans for all of eternity.

Aphrodite was trying to be kind. Was trying to save her poor little daughter from an eternity in the afterlife when she hadn't yet begun to understand life. Her attempt was good, but she'd only subjected the girl to an existence of misery.

It hadn't been on purpose, but that was the result.

Cherry became the goddess of human nature, which meant that she'd serve and carry humanity on her shoulders for the rest of time. It was terrifying, really, but nobody else could do it. It was her, what she'd been destined to do.

Percy Jackson could not wrap his mind around the concept of an empathetic god, of one who didn't use the demigods for their bidding.

Cherry was not any other god. She was twelve years old like Percy was. She'd been through a life full of anxiety, just to die and find out she now had to become accustomed to an entire new world of fears.

Still, she found it in herself to be kind, which is why it was so hard for her to understand why Percy Jackson hated her so much.
