Jenni took me to her house where she lived alone. It was somewhat dark inside, and the rooms were lit by small candles. I looked around curiously as she took me to the fore room. I stood there, looking down. We didn't even know each other, and yet she just took me in like I was some sort of puppy.
"Go ahead," she said, "Sit. Make yourself comfortable."
She motioned to the couch, and I sat down. I had no place to live. My parents died when I was but 13, and my brother Alden went to fight in some war. We used to write to each other quite often, but then the amount of letters gradually decreased due to the overwhelming amount of work he had to do. I understood, though.
As I was sitting, Jenni had gotten a blanket and put it on my shoulders. I smiled, and thanked her.
"You're welcome." she smiled back a bit, and sat next to me.
It was quiet for a few moments.
"... you know, you're awfully quiet. You haven't said much at all." Her eyes narrowed, a bit of a worried expression on her face.
I shrugged, "I guess..."
More silence.
"I know this sounds awkward, but where do you live? You don't have to say exactly... I'm just wondering." she asked, her eyes innocent.
"It's a couple blocks down from here, not too far. My brother's friend Duncan lives with me. I doubt you'd want to visit though, Duncan can be a pain sometimes and I doubt you'd want to hear me prattle on about my alchemy practices..." I trailed off.
"That's not true. You're really nice-"
"And just how do you know that? You don't even know me! You just took me into your house out of pity!" I snapped, glaring icily.
"I just... I don't know..." she mumbled.
"That's right. You don't." I muttered.
At that moment I realized my attitude. I shouldn't have done that. I was a total asshole. She didn't have to take me into her house. She was extremely kind and I yelled at her like that... The one perfect girl I find and I'm about to ruin everything.
"Jenni... I'm so..." I stammered.
"I understand why you acted in that manner. You're just not used to this, right?" she said, a glint in her eye.
"Uh...," I blinked, flustered by the mood changes, "Yeah, sure. That's what it is..."
There was something I noticed about her eyes... I couldn't put my finger on it. There was a sort of rim... contacts, maybe? I shook my head. Why did I care if she needed contacts? Ugh, I get so easily distracted sometimes...
She just watched me, curious about my attitude.
I suddenly felt uneasy. I looked away from her.
"Get a hold of yourself, Dawn. You're acting foolish. You're acting like she's a threat. Get to know her." I thought to myself.
"So... what are your hobbies?" I blurted out.
Hobbies. Seriously?
She chuckled, "I visit the forest often. It calms me, but I stay here most of the time."
Aww, she's so cute.
"So what do you say we go tomorrow? I need to go right now anyway, Duncan's probably raiding my room. But the forest... sounds like fun, oui?" I grinned, jesting a bit with the French. I started walking toward the door.
She laughed again, "Sounds like a date."
"A-a date?" I turned my head to look at her.
She just smiled and got up, pushing me out the door, "Get some sleep."
"H-hey! Wai--"
She shut the door, and I rolled my eyes. A date, huh?
I'll be looking forward to it.
