Ruby was scared. In fact, she was utterly terrified. But absolutely no way was she going to show Selena that in a few hundred years.
For the first time in Ruby's life, her entire world narrowed down to only her and the demon girl standing before her, even if it were for only a few seconds. All of a sudden, the world was just the two of them, staring each other down expressionlessly. Yet never had Ruby ever felt so calm, so prepared in the face of death.
She didn't want to kill Selena. Of course, she disliked her, but not with enough ferocity to want her dead. But Selena looked as if she wanted to kill Ruby with every single bone in her body. Although, Ruby had no idea what she'd ever done to make the girl hate her this much, in a way, she wasn't mad at Selena for it.
But of course, in the end, the only thing that mattered was who won.
Ruby swung her scythe back, gritting her teeth, and waited for Selena to make a move. Selena summoned a dark, ominous-looking flying demon who was practically radiating shadows, placing her hand on the top of its head almost lovingly. Ruby gulped. That thing looked scary as heck.
Then, with a vicious hiss, the slender dark creature leaped at her, lashing out with shadowlike claws. Ruby dodged as quickly as she could, but the creature had unbelievable speed, and was right behind her in a second. Panicking, Ruby immediately thrust her scythe out in front of her in defense, and the demon's ghastly white fangs closed around the handle with such force that it jarred Ruby's arms.
From someplace distant, Ruby thought she heard a sickeningly sweet laugh. 'Really? You're going to go down this quickly?' Selena said with a mocking lilt, making anger boil inside Ruby. 'I've overestimated you, Ruby. I never thought you were this weak.'
Ruby gritted her teeth even harder than she already was, infuriated. 'Just because you have some weird, I don't know, floating alien creature and I don't...' she said in a low growl, '...doesn't mean I'm weak!'
Then, with a sudden surge of strength, Ruby swung her scythe sideways with all her might, throwing the creature off with a force so huge it shocked even herself. Without sparing another second to think, Ruby immediately broke into a sprint, enraged, and ran at Selena as fast as she could, her scythe poised in front of her.
A look of brief surprise flitted over Selena's face, and Ruby felt a thrill of sinister satisfaction, especially as she sliced down with all her might, knowing Selena would dodge. As expected, she did, taking a slightly panicked step back away from Ruby. Ruby immediately lunged forwards aggressively again, refusing to have any mercy on her.
That was when a shockingly cold force slammed into her right, sending a bolt of enormous pain through her, not unlike the feeling of being electrocuted. Ruby spun around in a flurry of panic and attempted to block the screeching, bloodthirsty creature with her scythe, but couldn't do so in time before it sank its fangs into her left shoulder.
Ruby cursed as white-hot agony shot through her arm, so excruciating and painful that she nearly lost her grip on her scythe. The creature jerked its fangs abruptly, and Ruby couldn't hold back a yell of pain when her flesh ripped.
As Ruby struggled to get the creature off her once again, Selena walked towards Ruby with an air of elegance, a serene, malicious smile on her beautiful face. 'See?' she asked softly. 'Told you you were weak. Now die.'
Ruby froze, utterly petrified, when the creature dislodged its fangs from her shoulder so fast that she didn't have time to react, and opened its mouth wide, revealing hundreds of rows of razor-sharp teeth.
She was about to be devoured whole.
Just then, a familiar figure leaped up behind Selena, jumping to a height that looked practically inhuman. Alucard swung his huge silver sword behind his left shoulder, about to cut the demon down.
