I woke up to the repetitive beep of the alarm clock. Throwing off my covers, I quickly changed into the loose clothes that were on the top of my pile. Since it was our day off work, my friend and I decided to spend it walking around London and enjoying fresh air, away from our dead-end job in a team of programmers. As you can imagine, it involves a lot of screens and opportunities like this are rare, so we take them when we can.
When I opened the door to go out Luke was was standing there, looking at his phone. 'Ready to get some refreshing exercise?' I asked. 'Yep. I was thinking we could go join in with the football (yes I'm British) game?' 'Absolutely.'
It took us 3 minutes until we decided going the arcade would be a better idea. We agreed that exercise was for wimps, anyway.
Walking down the pavement towards the nearest arcade, we saw a commotion up ahead. A guy who looked to be about 21 with bloodshot eyes and tattered clothing was wildly swinging a knife around, shouting things like 'Stay away from me!'. He then started to run away from the crowd that had formed. Directly towards us. 'Get out of the way!' He shouted in a panicky voice. Holding the knife out in front of him, he turned his head away and kept on running forward. Lucas stood there, frozen. I quickly shoved him out of the way of the knife, but accidentally got in the way myself.
As the weapon sunk into my chest I was taken aback. It was cold. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the man run off, and Lucas crouched over me. 'Come on, mate. You can't die.' The world went blurry and I winced in pain as the knife was wrenched out. This proved to be a mistake, as it just quickened the blood loss. I wish I was smaller. The guy would have missed me then. Command taken into consideration. Permission granted. What the hell? Probably just me being delusional. Vaguely aware of a pool of blood around me, I suddenly felt a burning sensation all over my body. Ow! I really wish I couldn't be hurt by fire or heat. There've been so many times when I burnt myself on various things, like kettles, ovens or even straight up fire. I could have saved myself so much time if fire didn't hurt me. Command taken into consideration. Permission granted. That voice again, huh? Guess I really must be going crazy. Well, I guess this is it. Shame I didn't do much with my life. Maybe if I had had a proper support figure in life to guide me, this wouldn't have happened. Command taken into consideration. Permission granted. Final command has been issued. Stand by for crossing. Ugh...
'Ugh. My head hurts. When Lucas pulled the knife out of me hurt a lot. I should - wait. Knife? Shouldn't I be dead or something? Also, where am I?' You were dead. Currently, you are inside an egg in the upper levels of the Stratos Caves. If I'm dead, then why am I here? More importantly, who are you? That knowledge is not available to you currently. However, I am the Great Archive of Information and Learning. 'That so? It's a bit wordy, isn't it? What else could I call you? hmm... well, if you take out the and and of, you get GAIL as an acronym! You are now Gail!' Resetting call command.... finished.
'Now Gail, can you tell me why I am in an egg?' You are in an egg because your body is still developing. You are not ready to go out yet. 'Okay. Does that mean I'm a new type of human? I bet I'm in the future and I'm humanities last hope, a genetically modified being with enough power to - You are ready to leave. 'Great! Let's break out of this egg and see what the future looks like!' I then started to try to punch my way out of the apparent egg. However, when I curled my fists, I had only three slimy digits, which appeared to be black. Wonder what this is all about? When I punched the walls of the egg, I saw that it had little to no effect. 'Why isn't this working, Gail?' It is not effective to punch the sides of the egg. However, your species have been known to escape by head butting their way out. 'Guess I'll try that, then.' to my surprise, it worked! Cracks had started to form, from what I could see in the darkness of the egg.
Several head butts later, I burst through the roof of the egg, and was almost blinded by the light. It wasn't that it was particularly light out here, the only illumination coming from weird fungi on the walls, but compared to the darkness of the egg it was light a spotlight. I appeared to be in some sort of cave, lots of other eggs scattered around, and a mouth that lead to a cliff leading into a much larger room, from which a red glow pulsed. I wasn't close enough to see it, but it looked dangerous.
'Gail, where am I?' You are in the upper levels of the Stratos Caves, like I said before. 'Oh. So I'm not humanity's last hope?' No. You are not, in fact, human, nor are you anywhere near a human dwelling. 'Not human? Can't say I'm surprised.' You're taking this surprisingly well, considering that you just died, have been transported to another world, and are no longer the same species. 'I'm in another world? Well, if that's true, then it's a relief. It's not like there was anything great about my last life. I was in a job that I didn't enjoy, I only had one friend who lived on the other side of my city, and my love life was non existent! To be quite frank, I'm a bit disappointed that I wasn't a superhero or something, but the more I think about it, the better not being human seems! Besides, if this is anything like on TV, then I should be a super powered demon lord with immense powers!' I'm afraid that you're going to be disappointed. 'Why?' Look in that puddle of water on the floor. 'Okay.'
I walked over to it being careful not to touch the other eggs. I looked at it, and the realisation shocked me. I was a lizard-looking thing with slick black scales. I was standing on four legs, which I had not noticed before, and I had an orange stripe going down my back. I opened my mouth to cry out in astonishment, and as I did I saw in the puddle a pair of small but pointy fangs, and a forked tongue flicker in and out between my teeth. As I did this, I assaulted by a barrage of smells that seemed to come from my tongue. (A/N: reptiles actually smell through their tongues!)
"I'm a newt?"
(A/N: Hope you enjoyed the first chapter of the book! I know it's a bit short, but this is my first story, so you can't expect too much from me. I'm open to constructive criticism, but please don't hate.)
