Chapter One:

We walked down the sidewalk, holding hands and laughing. It was the day I turned sixteen, and I decided to spend it with the person I have wanted for the longest time. Roy Benedict, my crush since third grade. We have both known that we both had crushes on each other, but since I
am Mormon, I wasn't allowed to date him till I was Sixteen. And finally, I am and I will spend as much time as I can with him.

"Hey Renette, are you okay? You seem sad." Roy said with great concern.

"Huh? Oh, no. I'm just frozen with excitement that we can finally be together."

"Okay, hey do you want to go over to the stream and watch the baby swans swim?"

"What! The mom gave birth while I was gone? How come you haven't told me yet?" I questioned.

"Well, I wanted it to be a surprise for when you came back."

"Come on! We've gotta hurry if we want to make it there in time for the sunset!" I replied enthusiastically.

"What? Who said anything about a sunset?" He stated, obviously very surprised.
"I did dummy! I think it'll be romantic, don't you?" I said as I gave him a kiss on the cheek.

We ran until our feet hurt, then we walked the rest of the way. When we got there, we laid out jackets down on the ground and sat on them and watched the sunset. My head was laid on his shoulder while he brushed his fingers through my hair. It was the perfect moment. I closed my eyes and wished to myself that it would last forever. But sadly, forever ended a lot earlier than I thought it would.

We ended up falling asleep on the hill beside the stream. Roy suddenly jerked up with a terrified look in his eyes.

"What? What is it Roy?" I asked the expressionless face. I turned to look at what he was staring at, and suddenly froze with fear as well. Wolves, bloodthirsty, vicious wolves.

"Stand up slowly Renette, don't do anything other than that. Do you understand?" "Yes, yes I do. But what if they charge at us?"
"I'll hold them back. You just stand up and walk away slowly."
"But what if they attack you? Roy I won't let you do this!"

"Go! Go now Renette!"

Reluctantly I got up and backed away slowly. Tears started welling up in my eyes as I saw that every step I took, the wolves came closer too. Roy told me to run, and I did. The wolves started to charge at me, but then Roy jumped in their path. He was getting scratched and bitten all over, soon all of his clothes will be drenched in warm blood. A few seconds later I figured out that my best chance of surviving was to climb into one of the many trees around us.

I started to climb onto the rough bark that covered the tree trunk and branches. By the time I got high enough that the wolves couldn't get me, I realized that three of the wolves were gone.
And so was Roy, the tears that were welling up in my eyes for a few minutes now, finally came out. About an hour later, the wolves left, but just to be safe, I stayed in the tree another half hour.

When I was on the ground I suddenly realized that the love of my life was gone forever. And that I would have to tell people about the incident and how the wolves killed Roy. I would have to
be the one to tell his parents. To calm myself down, I simply thought about that moment. That perfect moment when nothing else mattered. It was just Roy and me sitting and watching the beautiful sunset together.

I walked over to the last place I saw Roy and the wolves before I climbed into the tree. He was by our jackets protecting me from the wolves. Horrible images of him and the wolves started flashing into my head. I shuddered and squatted to look at the ground where they were fighting. There were tiny threads and pieces from his shirt that were covered in blood on the ground. His blood, my Roy's blood. I got up, wiped away my tears and walked away.
