-emily had just walked through the door of the brewaria's heart froze.
spencer stated at the entrance and the person standing in it and sighed."what's she doing here?" spencer hissed through the corner of her mouth.
"i don't know, but we told her we were going straight home so she's gonna be pissed!" aria whispered to spencer.
"she cant know we're here - i really can't deal with her right now" spencer muttered. "hide!" and with that, spencer ducked under the coffee table, which was surprisingly spacious.
"what? spence we can't-" but her sentence got cut short as she turned around to face spencer, who was no longer there for her to face.
"spence..?"
no reply
"spencer?!" aria whispered, confused.
just as she was about to ask spencer why she was hiding - and in such an obvious spot, she heard a voice, aria knew who it was."aria?"
taking a deep breath in and turning around, aria stood up to greet emily. "em! hey! w-we thought your shift started at 7, not 6?" aria stuttered, trying to compose herself from bursting into laughter knowing her friend was still under the table.
"well, it did, but then jared called me in an hour early saying the cappuccino machine needed fixing" emily explained. aria shot jared a loathsome glare that would set any normal person into a fit of panic - she was little - but she was big.
"what are you two doing here i thought you were going straight home? you didn't lie did you?" emily asked, that same wide-eyed look falling over her face.
"two? what do you mean, there's only me here em?" aria replied, avoiding the question."do you take me for a fool aria?" emily said in a knowing tone. "spencer, i can see you, come out of there" emily said, rolling her eyes.
"oh, hey emily! i uhh- just uh- dropped my pen" spencer said in an attempt at a lie.
emerging from under the wooden surface, spencer banged her head on the top of the table. aria was really fighting back the urge to laugh now.
"hey em!" exclaimed spencer "didn't see you there!" it was almost as if she was mocking her, but not quite.
aria let out a little snort, but instantly covered her mouth with her hand."i see you've got out of your little hidy hole then" emily said accusingly. "what are you even doing here"
"well you see, i uhh- we uhm-" spencer spluttered, not being able to find the words.
"what spencer is trying to say" aria had collected herself after her small trip-up.
"is that we both bumped into eachother grabbing a quick coffee to go on the way home"spencer looked down at aria in admiration at the girl's ability to lie so fluently.
"yeah! that's what i meant" spencer agreed.
"but we left hanna's a half hour ago?" questioned emily, once again.
"wellll..."
spencer could see that aria was struggling for words this time.
"is that the time already?" she cut in "i think i better be getting off then, aria?"
"i- yeah, me too" aria's sentence trailed off because spencer had already grabbed her arm and made a run for the door, leaving emily behind for her morning shift.

still running, aria noticed that spencer was yet to break contact with her arm. she realised that she sort of liked the feeling, it was comforting."i...think we're....safe...now" panted spencer, coming to a halt outside the local bakery. she finally took her hand away from aria's arm as she realised she may have held on for a little too long, but she enjoyed it, it was an odd feeling.
the girls took a moment to breathe, then looked at eachother, and burst into a fit of laughter. once they had calmed down, aria suggested;
"hey, how about we go in split a donut?" she pointed to the bakery. "my treat"
"nah ah, you payed for the coffee, this ones on me" spencer smiled, as they walked through the little glass doors of the pink and white bakery.
———————————————————
waking up the next morning, the girls both had a strange feeling in their stomaches. it was as if one thousand tiny butterflies had nested there and wouldn't stop fluttering their wings up and down. was this feeling mutual? was it possible they felt things for each other, things that normal friends didn't experience?

ugh i wish this was real
