Society has always been cruel. From the day I turned 5, and my brothers went off to school, I felt, even then that it was unfair. How could they go to school and learn interesting things, while I had to stay home with Mrs June Ass and learn embroidery and poetry? Well, she was actually called Mrs Judas but as I rebelled against learning these "basic skills a woman needs" I decided to alter her name slightly. Every day from when I turned 5 in 1885, I felt a need to make a difference. My mother was a respectable lady, with a happy life and children, but still she couldn't own a house on her own, or even vote!
I had always known that my mother Jo March was a rebellious woman, going on to publish her own books, but still, why did she have to work so hard for men to listen?
I will never understand or accept how men treat us, so this is why, in 1908, I joined the suffragettes...
