George was startled awake by the muffled sound of drunken shouting and glass bottles slamming against the table downstairs, the TV was blearing with cheers from the crowd of a football game. The boy rubbed his eyes and reached for the bedside table, trying to find his phone.

His head was pounding and his stomach churned, he hadn't been able to eat all day. George decided that he'd had enough. He didn't want to live another day trapped in this house, he was going to leave.

George crept down the stairs, peering around the corner once he got to the bottom to make sure that his father was asleep, he had dozed off on the sofa just after George got home from school, this was his only chance, being trapped in this house was living hell, and he wasn't sure how much more he could take. He stepped slowly towards the front door and twisted the lock as quietly as he could. 'Clunk' He immediately looked behind him, luckily, the man was still asleep. Twisting the doorknob slightly, he felt the cold outside air seep into the house. He heard moving from behind him, his dad's snoring was paused whilst he shifted his position on the couch. George was so close, he couldn't stop now.

Stepping out into the cold, He was finally free. He took a minute to take in the fresh air and gather his thoughts, but while he was standing there, he heard the floor boards creaking inside his house... He didn't know where he was going, but he knew he didn't have much time before he got caught, so he ran.
"GEORGE" It was his dad, he was standing in the doorway. As soon as he spotted the little boy, he began to chase after him. His son didn't look back, he didn't want to ever see that man again in his life. But as fast as he ran, his dad was catching up. A heavy hand grabbed onto the little boys shoulder and dragged him back.
"Come on George let's go back home"
George fought his father but he wasn't strong enough, he was pulled back to the house once more. He was never going to make it out.

Since that day, George never tired to run again. He was so afraid of what would happen to him if he did, and anyway, he had no where to go. He couldn't stay away for long, he knew his father would always manage to find him. But he had to try.

He grabbed his largest backpack and shoved a few clean tops and trousers from his dresser into it. Trying not to make to much noise, he clambered up his shelves to reach the sleeping bag at the top and continued to stuff it in with the clothes. His put on his trainers and pulled a hoodie over his t-shirt, straightening it out in the mirror. He wasn't sure what to feel. To be honest, he wasn't feeling much of anything right now, but he knew that he had to get out.

He leant over the window, it was quite a large drop. Shit. It was facing the back of the house, meaning that he could jump out and sneak around the front without being noticed. He swung the bag over his shoulder and made his way out. First shoving a pillow out the window, then swinging his legs over the sill, he jumped aiming for the cushioned landing. As he landed he fell right onto his back but didn't stay down for long, he had to get running if he was going to get far enough away for his dad to never find him again.

Keeping low to the ground, he made his way around the house stopping outside the window in the room where he knew the man was. Rising from his crouched position he looked in to see his dad throwing his arms up in the air and cheering in excitement at his favourite teams goal, he couldn't help but smile, if only this was how it always was, but it wasn't. His smile disappeared when he noticed him swing around, luckily George ducked just in time and continued creeping around the garden until he got to a place where he could run. And he did. He ran until he couldn't bare it anymore.
