Surprisingly, she wasn’t met by a bright light, when she opened her eyes again. Instead, she looked up to a rather dirty and broken ceiling in a very poorly lighted room.
The pain had faded away, so she was most likely dead. The last thing she could remember was laying outside in front of the ministry building, with Isabel kneeling next to her.
Poor Isabel. She was probably still sitting at the battlefield, only that she was now alone. And adding to that, she was also the one who had to tell everyone the news now.
How would her kids react when they would learn that their Ymbryne had died? And where would they live now? Would Isabel take them in?
She got pulled out of her thoughts when she felt something shift against her. She hadn’t noticed until just then that something heavier was laying on her arm.
Slowly her head turned to the side. Her eyes needed some time to focus but then she could see a person sitting on a chair next to her, with her head pressed against Miss Peregrine’s side.
Her lips curved into a smile when she recognized the sleeping form and her hand instinctively stroked through the other woman’s short hair.
Isabel's head shot up at the light contact. She looked incredibly tired and her eyes were red and slightly swollen. Tears started to form in her eyes again as soon as she had raised her head.
Slowly Alma tried to sit up, her back leaning against the wall.
For a short while no one said a word. Miss Cuckoo just stared at the woman in front of her but she couldn’t get out a word. Almost as if she was too afraid to wake up if she speaks….wake up and find Alma dead in her arms.
Miss Peregrine was the one who finally broke the silence.
“I told you that I would be fine.”
It was barely a whisper but Isabel could hear it very clear. The words had pulled her out of her rigidity and her head snapped back.
“Don’t you dare to do that ever again!” she said, her voice shaking.
And then she threw her arms around Alma’s neck and hugged her tightly, nearly pushing her down again.
Miss Peregrine rubbed small circles on the taller woman’s back, who was sobbing in her shoulder.
"Shhh, it's okay. I'm fine," she whispered.
After some time Isabel had calmed down again and eventually pulled her head back. Her eyes showed fear but also relief.
"Promise me to never do that again," Isabel whispered, choking back new tears.
Alma sighed lightly and lowered her head, her eyes avoiding Isabel's brown pair.
"Please…"
Miss Peregrine took a deep breath and finally looked up again. Her green eyes met Isabel's brown ones and she instantly winced when she saw the hurt in them.
"You know I can't do that," Alma said sadly.
'But I love you.'
Miss Cuckoo tore her eyes away. She couldn't get herself to say the words. Maybe one day she would be brave enough, but not today.
A loud crashing sound brought them back.
"Where are my children? How are they?" Miss Peregrine asked slightly in panic.
She struggled to get out of the bed until Isabel grabbed her arm to help her up.
"They are fine or at least the ones that are here."
Together they stumbled out in the lobby. It was full of injured and bone menders and in between all that were Miss Peregrine's children fighting the Wights and Ambrosia's.
Most of them ran to her as soon as she entered the room.
"Alright back to work," she sighed when another loud crash filled the air and the earth began to shake again.
"Miss Peregrine, look!" Bronwyn shouted and pointed out of the window.
It was Jacob and the others riding on Hollows. Miss Peregrine breathed a sigh of relief. They were alright.
Together with Bronwyn she went outside to meet them.
