She reached out for my hand but, I was reluctant.
"Come on, Chris!" She urged. "We have to jump."
"But, we could die! You know that I'm not a good swimmer."
"I'll help you."
The police sirens got louder and louder as they approached us.
I panicked.
I was terrified. I couldn't spend the rest of my life in prison and I didn't want to drown. But, I trusted her enough. I let her convince me to jump. She would have ended up jumping without me and I would have went after just so she wouldn't be in it alone.
I stood on the edge with her and she held my hand tightly.
"Oh my goodness, I'm scared."
"Don't be afraid. Close your eyes and we'll count to three." I closed them shut and held her hand tightly. "You ready?"
"Yeah. Wait... one, two, three, jump? Or one, two, jump?"
"One, two, three, jump!" She sighed annoyed, I could practically feel her eyes rolling.
"Ok."
"1..."
The sirens grew louder as five cop cars made a sharp turn onto the bridge we dangled ourselves over. I grew anxious with every second passing my breath seemed to escape me.
"2..."
They all came to a complete stop and filled out of their cars with their guns pointed at us.
"Stop right there!" One of them yelled through a bullhorn. A helicopter flew over us, the bright white light nearly blinded us.
I was suddenly snatched off of the edge of the bridge when she jumped, our fingers still intertwined. They fired their guns as we fell.
"You said we were gonna jump after three!" I exclaimed as the wind blew through my hair.
It felt like we were falling forever. But, I held onto her hoping that I wouldn't loose her on impact.
We fell into the cold water below and her hand slipped away from mine just as I had feared.
Now, you're probably wondering...
What the heck happened? How did you two end up running from the police and jumping off of a bridge into the river?
What did you do?
To answer this questions, I'll have to go back to a week prior to now.
She had turquoise hair that was shaved down. Small curls were starting to grow back in.
She was short.
But, if I ever said that to her, she would rebuttal with, "I'm just 5'4. I'm neither short nor tall." But, she was shorter than me, so it didn't matter much.
She always enjoyed wearing clothes two times her size. You would hardly ever see her wearing a fitted shirt, pants or dress. She just enjoyed wearing large jackets, shirts and pants.
I don't know why this is but, a part of me believes that she was just a bit insecure about her body. She never let me to believe it and she never spoke on it. She has always been beautiful to me.
But, today she was wearing a skirt.
A short one and I thought it looked cute on her. It was black and simple.
I watched from behind a book shelf as she picked out a thick book from a higher shelf. I watched quietly as she struggled to reach it.
I would usually step in to help but, today she was mad at me and I didn't want her to know that I had followed her here.
She stopped and swiftly turned around to me. She had given me no time to duck and hide.
Cover blown.
"Since you're standing there, do you mind helping me?" She stared me down.
"Sorry." I moved from my hiding place to pull a book from the shelf.
"Thank you." She grabbed it and flipped through the pages. She liked reading different authors every week. This week it was Jules Verne. "Why have you been following me all day? Don't you have classes?"
"Today is Friday. I don't have classes today."
"Well, I wish you did." She mumbled as she walked past me to get to her usual spot at the usual table by the usual window.
"Tabby, I said I was sorry." I followed. "What else do you want me to do? You didn't even want to talk to me this morning."
"How do you expect me to act when you forget our anniversary date? What were you doing? Were you texting someone else? Do you have another girlfriend I should know about?"
Geez, we sounded like a married couple already.
"No. There's no one else--"
"Then why weren't you there? Huh?" She asked as her sharp cynical brown eyes burned a hole in my face.
I couldn't tell her.
"I just forgot." Was my excuse. Goodness Chris you're so stupid, like she's really going to believe that.
"Yeah sure. Whatever." She rolled her eyes and cracked open her book.
"Look," I moved from across the table to the seat right next to her. "I'll make it up to you."
"How?"
"After school today we can go out and do whatever you want. I'll pay for it all."
"No." She shook her head. "You need all of your money for school. That would be foolish."
"Then what do you want to do?"
"I wish you had just remembered our date in the first place." She got up and shoved the book in her bookbag. "I need to go meet up with my professor. Don't follow me."
She knew that I wasn't going to listen.
I wasn't lying when I said I forgot. But, I only told a half truth.
With her birthday coming up in a week. I planned an elaborate party with the help of my friends. Now, all I had to do was keep the secret. I was so busy planning that I forgot.
She had to stay mad at me for another week or else my efforts would have gone to waste.
