Those memories will always haunt me. They plagued my dreams every night, and have been doing so for the last 28 years of my life. Sometimes I wished that I also ended up like them because then at least I could be with them again... but that's not how it happened.

"Detective Fritz, good job on solving the Wilson case!" one of his colleagues said congratulating him, slapping him on the back as he walked by. Fritz smiled and thanked him, and his other colleagues that congratulated him. The Wilson case seemed to have been unsolvable since there was hardly any solid evidence or leads, but he still managed to solve it after 2 months of drowning himself in the case, going over the reports and leads he did have, letting it consume him. In the end it all worked out and the killer was caught and the Wilson family had a little bit of clarity knowing that their daughters' murderer was in jail for a very long time.

Fritz walked over to his messy desk and began to clean up all the files that were stacked on his desk, preparing to take them back to the file room. He always had mixed emotions whenever he solved a case like this, but he never let it show. He was happy- well as happy as you can be finding a murderer, but also jealous at the same time.

...they never found him... he never got what he deserved...

"Charlie," someone said standing beside his desk. He looked up at one of his work mates, "Me and some of the others are gonna head down to the pub for a few drinks. You wanna come? Celebrate solving another case aye."

"Sorry Max, I'm picking up Sam from her mother's after I finish up here. Maybe next time." Fritz said as he focused back on putting all the right things in the right case files.

"Yeah, right, no problem mate. Good job." Max said as he walked towards the stairway down to the bottom floor. Fritz sighed and ran his hands over his face and looking at the framed photo he had of Samantha on his desk. She looked a lot like her mother... but a few of her features looked like his mums.

After he checked the file back into the file room, he grabbed his coat and his bag and left to his car. It was around 9pm, the sky was pitch-black already and the air was icy sending chills down his body. He rushed to his car, not wanting to be out in the open for too much longer, always looking over his shoulder expecting someone to be there wanting to kill him. Maybe someone he caught before, or maybe someone connected to someone he put away or just some random with a hatred for detectives. Like every other night, no one was there despite the feeling of being watched, and he made it to his car safely and left to pick up his daughter from her mothers.

She lived in the really wealthy side of the city. It was all thanks to his exes' new husband who was a well-known lawyer and got a boat load of money. Charlie pulled into a drive-way and stopped at a large green gate. He reached out his window and pressed a button next to a speaker.

"It's Charlie." He said. The gate slowly opened on its own and he pulled up the long driveway to a large house. Out the front waiting was Sam and her mum who was wrapped in a thick coat.

"Daddy!" Sam said excitedly, running over to his car. Charlie quickly hopped out and picked up Sam with a huge smile on his face and hugging her close.

"Hey Princess, how was mum's?" he said looking into her blue eyes- a wave of sadness washed over him, but he pushed it away.

"Gooooooooood." She dragged, her voice getting higher near the end of the word.

"Were you good?" he asked smirking as he already knew the answer and wanted to see if she would fess up.

As expected... she did not, "I always am." Sam said cheekily. He chuckled and looked over at his ex and then back to his daughter.
