A tail of two loves, one of the sea and one of land each wanting something else they can never have..or so they thought

Chapter 1: The Canyon
"Come on Mina! Hurry up!" Yelled Kaiyo swimming ahead of her. He'd have an albino tail with pale white skin and long white hair which reached his shoulders. A few of his fins on his tail would be pink and he'd have webbed like hands like every other merfolk. He also had red markings on his right arm signifying that he was of royal blood.
"I'm coming! Slow down Kaiyo! I need a break" She stopped to catch her breath as her gills opened and closed as she breathed. her purple and teal tail glistening in the light as she swam. She would have two large light blue fins on her back with long pointed ears.
"Slow poke" Kaiyo said teasingly as he swam up a bit farther ahead. Around them, Stretching as far out as you could see was nothing but sand, ocean water, a large canyon that was too dark to see the bottom and a dim glow of lights from the castle miles away from them.
"Wow!! I wonder how far down it goes" Kaiyo said, swimming over to the side of it and looking down at the canyon. Mina grabbed Kaiyo's arm and pulled him back.
"What are you doing?! Where not supposed to go anywhere near that thing. What if there are monsters??" Mina said as fear could be heard in her voice.
"Relax it's fine, watch I'll show you" as Kaiyo said this he swam over the canyon out of Mina's reach, his tail flipping every so often to keep him from going down into the canyon.
"Ahh!" He yelled down at the canyon and his voice would echo back at him.
"See it's fine" he'd say to Mina then does it again. "Echo!" His voice echoing back at him once more.
Mina would think for a moment then join him, yelling into the canyon and hearing her voice echo back with his.
Suddenly two beady yellow eyes appeared in the canyon and a giant creature would rise out of the canyon in front of them and roar in anger. The monster had dark blue scales with many fins and large teeth with a massive tail.
Both Kaiyo and Mina scream as the monster roars at them. They'd turn and bolt off in separate directions, Mina swimming towards the city well Kaiyo swimming out towards the endless horizon of sand and murky water. The monster chased after Mina, ignoring Kaiyo completely. He looked behind himself and watched as the monster chased Mina. Although she was fast the monster was closing in on her. Kaiyo looked around for help but there was nobody else around them, just him, Mina and the vicious monster that was chasing her. He'd collect himself and took off after the monster swimming ever so close to the monster's long scaly tail.
Just as Kaiyo reached out to grab the end of the monster's tail, it had moved out of reach and chomped down on the end of Mina's tail making a red liquid blood, fill the water near the monster's mouth as Mina's screams echoed in Kaiyo's ears.
As he heard the screams he'd snap and swim faster towards the front of the monster, grabbing a sharp edged shell as the monster neared the ground hitting mina against the ground. Kaiyo managed to make his way to the front of the monster and hit the shell into the monster's yellow eye making it roar out in pain and let go of Mina who was now passed out.
Kaiyo grabbed Mina well the monster was distracted and started to swim towards the castle.
The monster looked around as red spreaded into its vision of its left eye. As it looked around for them it lost track of kaiyo and mina then swam back down into the canyon.
Kaiyo continued to swim towards the castle as fast as he could, holding unconscious Mina who now had an injured tail hoping to make it there before she lost more blood which was leaving a streak of red in the water behind them.
