Carmen's arms were heavy with fatigue as they cut down enemies left and right. At first, they had been whirling around in a frenzy. But as she moved further into enemy lines, her body had subconsciously fallen into a rhythm of slaughter. Cut, fire. Cut, fire. Cut, fire. The battle was a blanket of noise, darkness, and snow pressing in around her. The scent of gunpowder and blood invaded her nostrils with every breath. Her ears were filled with the sounds of weapons piercing flesh, followed by the blood-curdling screams of dying men. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see the light of Regina's magic reflecting off her son's sword. A sudden impulse caused her to look back, giving her unseen opponent a fatal opportunity. Using his entire body weight, the black knight in front of her charged his shoulder into hers, which sent her flying back two metres before crashing into the snowy sludge on the ground. The impact knocked all air from her lungs, causing her to gasp and delay her reaction. By the time her lungs had recovered, the knight's dark figure was already looming over her, arms raised and holding the sword vertically, aimed right at her chest. For the briefest of moments, the knight was frozen in that position. Which was all the time she needed to thrust her sword into his exposed stomach and wrench it out as he collapsed. With a breathless laugh, she let her body fall backwards, ignoring the cold moisture seeping into her clothes. As she lay there, in the midst of the carnage, the entire world seemed to stop as her eyes lingered on the stars that struggled to shine through the cover of clouds. Everything was silent while she contemplated their existence. In a split second of peace, heart was flooded with warmth as hope surged through her veins. Then, in a sudden rush of noise, the cries of the world came crashing back down in a tsunami of destruction.
"Penny for your thoughts?!" Lucas' voice flooded her right ear. She turned her head to see his bright-eyed grin barely a centimetre from her nose.
"Just thinking I should probably get up some time soon." She replied.
"Yeah, that might be a good idea."
"Okay." she smiled. After a slight pause, she continued. "We should probably go now."
"Yeah."
With a smile, she leapt to her feet and resumed hacking away at the never-ending stream of enemy soldiers that flowed down Main Street.∞
Regina's heart was beating so hard it hurt as she threw fireball after fireball at the oncoming soldiers. Her wrists were aching as she twisted them, using her magic to snap row upon row of necks. Beside her was Henry, who'd removed a dozen heads within the first minute. The sight of him like this, in his golden armour, ending lives with a flick of his wrist made her stomach lurch. But in that brief moment she took to glance at her son, one of the Overlord's soldiers took the chance to raise his sword. Regina gasped and closed her eyes, shielding her head as he brought the blade crashing down towards her. There was a loud THWACK. She looked up to see the shaft of an arrow protruding from his chest, still quivering from the impact. With a slight gasp, he collapsed in a heap. Regina looked behind her to see Robin up on the rooftop, smiling down at her as he pulled back another arrow and let it fly. With a smile, she turned back to the battle, taking in the sheer amount of soldiers around her. Aided by flashbacks from her night in the forest, she held her hands together, pulling them apart slowly as an orb of crimson light grew in her palms. In a burst of movement, she clamped her hands shut and yanked them to her chest, gasping for air as the resulting blast of magic radiated out of her, turning all enemy soldiers to dust right before her eyes.
"Go mom!" Henry cried. With her adrenaline pumping, Regina summoned a sword into her hand, and charged behind her son into the fray.∞
"I hope they're okay." Snow sighed as she looked out over the kingdom, flinching whenever a ball of fire was sent roaring into the sky. Several times, a large orb of red light radiated out from different points of the battle, which was obscured by the buildings of downtown Storybrooke.
"I'm sure they're fine." Charming replied, slipping his arms around his wife and resting his head on her shoulders.
"I know. But those red blasts have to be coming from Regina. And I know her. She'll try, but there's no way she can keep that up all night."
"I wouldn't write my sister off just yet, Snow." Zelena's voice came from the door. The Charmings turned to see Zelena, Cora, Henry, and Andre file into the room. Zelena was still dressed in her battle garb, with her sword strapped to her back and her broom in her hands.
"What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be heading out to help?" David demanded.
"Carmen asked us to stay here on standby in case of an aerial attack from the enemy."
"Ah."
"Here's hoping that it won't come to that." Cora said, placing her hand on Zelena's arm with the affection only a mother could have.
"I'll be fine, mother. I'm not a child anymore."
"I know. But I just got back here. And I don't know what I'd do if you, or Regina, or Carmen went in and..." she choked.
"It'll be fine, mother. Carmen hasn't called yet, so everything must be okay."
