When Teresa Lisbon first signed on with Patrick Jane, a lot of people thought she was crazy. Jane was a grieving widow who only wanted to catch Red John, and even though he was helpful in solving cases he could potentially be too much trouble. However, Lisbon kind of felt sorry for him. The man had lost everything, and obviously had nothing else to do.
He started gaining confidence in himself again as they solved cases and soon his true character began to pop out. He would frequently cause trouble which Lisbon had to fix, but honestly he made the job a lot more interesting.
Lisbon lived and died by the rules but Jane was a free spirit who couldn't be controlled. Despite how irritating he could be she secretly liked the sense of adventure around him and looked forward to coming to work to see what he'd do next.
They became friends eventually, with Jane helping her out when she was wrongfully accused of murder, and he let her know that he trusted her and that he'd always be there for her. As time went on they became closer and closer as they were closing in on Red John, and many nights Lisbon found herself lying awake at night thinking about what to do with him.
She knew that the focus was on catching Red John, and Jane was a secretive person anyway, so she pushed down any thoughts of something more and focused on helping him.
When the showdown happened and Jane fled to Mexico, Lisbon had risked everything for him. She'd gone above and beyond because she truly cared about him. She eventually found a job as a police chief and Jane wrote to her. She really missed him and the way things used to be but she was happy that he was safe.
She wasn't really sure if she ever expected to see him again, so when she was told to come to the FBI and was reunited with Jane, she was elated. He looked so much better than the last time she'd seen him, more relaxed, like a weight had been lifted. He demanded to work with her and secretly Lisbon was flattered that he still cared that much about her.
Working at the FBI was different but to be honest Lisbon would follow Jane anywhere. It was no longer a secret to her how she felt, but she wasn't sure of how Jane felt. When she found someone of her own, Jane started acting weirdly, and she tried to drop hints of her true feelings. Jane appeared to feel the same but just wasn't able to express that, and Lisbon couldn't wait for him all of her life. She now had a chance to have a life with a good man, and she wasn't going to let that pass her by.
Jane told her that he wanted her to be happy, but that just confused Lisbon even more. Happy? With who? She knew he didn't want her to leave. He'd made that very clear. They were so close for so long that her moving away was like ripping out a part of him.
When she realized that Jane had faked an entire case just to get her to stay, Lisbon was hurt. After all of this time, why did Jane still have to manipulate and deceive her? Couldn't he just say what he wanted to say? She was fed up of him doing this to her and playing with her feelings. It would be hard but she had to leave him and go start a new life with someone who had made it clear that he wanted her, and wouldn't play with her feelings.
Jane tried to apologize but she didn't want to hear it. She was done with him.
So when she saw him appear on the plane, and he finally told her he loved her, she went through so many emotions. She loved him too, and she'd waited so long to hear him say those words. There was no question about it: he was the one.
Lisbon got off the plane and went to tell Jane she felt the same, thus beginning an uncertain but fully desired new life with him, leading eventually to her pregnancy and marriage to him.
