Tokyo, Japan, April 1991, 6:00 PMCostal Japan was always something that Gwen had wanted to see. It was even better that she was here for school—what better reason to travel when it counted towards college?
She was sitting on bench by the pier, sketching the rocky shore, sea, and birds that soared on the sea breeze. The current assignment for her drawing class was landscape sketching, most of her classmates when to the parks close to the university's campus for the legendary cherry blossoms, but Gwen's heart was set on the seascape. It held a certain peace—a tranquility in the constant swelling of the waves and the salty breeze. It was an indescribable sensation.
Jotaro was walking along the pier, quietly enjoying the sea breeze on his face and the sound of the rolling waves. He often came out here between projects or when he just needed a break from homework and the annoying group study sessions that were required for participation credit. Bio-chem was a bitch to get through, so he needed a walk to cool off and clear his head. He could sense Star Platinum absolutely soaking everything in—he loved the ocean just as much as his Master, especially watching the seagulls and the smell of the salt. He'd be floating behind Jotaro if they weren't in a public setting, but after Egypt, they gained some major notoriety in the Stand world for defeating so many users and Dio. It was almost to the point that the Speedwagon Foundation advised that Jotaro had undercover bodyguards, but he convinced them to abandon the idea.
"How can anyone protect me if they can't even see what they're up against?" Was his argument. They begrudgingly agreed and left him alone so long he kept a low profile. No problem. He didn't like unnecessary confrontation—or even people for that matter.
'I really want out.' Star whined in his head.
"No." Jotaro said bluntly. "You know the rule."
'But there's no one here and it's such a beautiful evening. I'll be good and stay close and disappear if I sense anything.' He continued. 'Pleeeassseee?'
"Good grief," Jotaro sighed in annoyance. "Fine, but as soon as anything—and I mean anything—happens, you're going right back in, no ifs, ands, or buts. Understood?" He held up a finger to emphasize the point. Normally, he wouldn't talk to Star Platinum out loud, but with nobody around, he wouldn't look like he was talking to himself. Even if he technically was.
'Yes!' Star shot out of his consciousness, spiraling into the air with his arms out wide, letting the setting sun warm his skin. He took in a long, deep breath, absorbing it all. Jotaro enjoyed watching his Stand take joy in the simple pleasures of life, it made him happy too.
'Isn't this nice?' Gwen's imaginary friend asked, wearing a soft smile and cupping her face in her hands as she floated behind the bench and Gwen's shoulder.
"It is." She replied with a similar grin. Ever since she was six, Gwen had had an imaginary friend that only she could see. The friend could interact with actual physical things and had her own thoughts—nothing like the imaginary ones her friends had ever had. This initially caused a few problems, but Gwen eventually decided it was best to keep the fact that her friend was still around to herself. She had nothing against her, she just randomly appeared one day and had explained many times that she didn't know where she came from or why, but she did know that her purpose was to protect Gwen. It didn't really matter from what, but she was there for her when nobody else was. She was her comfort and empath when Gwen couldn't find the real support she needed in her friends or family—she wouldn't feel comfortable without her.
"I feel like I'm missing something..." Gwen held out her sketchpad to compare it to the seascape in front of her.
'Hmmm...' Her friend was also very helpful in her art studies, she often saw missed details and was always an excellent model for poses and anatomy. 'I feel like the waves could use a little more texture...'
