Our dishes were taken away after we had finished eating leaving us seated in our seats alone, since all the maids had been excused.. There was a moment of quite and I sat there anxiously waiting for my father to get on with the story.

"Where do i get started?" He said quietly in thought.  He seemed lost in his thoughts for a while and  that heightened my curiosity the more. Though I knew he was doing this purposely.

Finally making up his mind he started, "The woman that died was called Harriet. She was the only daughter of her family and as such was pampered and cherished by her parents like your Mum and I are for you. They looked after her like she was some fragile egg which with one slip might break. They took her to school, furthered her education oversea after high school and gave her everything and anything that she needed or wanted.

"She was expected to some home after finishing College which she did. But to the utter surprise of her parents she came home with a partner. A male partner. not that they minded if she had a boyfriend or anything, she was of age. But what gave them the greatest shock of their lifetime was that, their dearest daughter brought home a man that she insisted on marring soon." There was a pause here as if he wanted to give it an exaggeration.

"Not knowing anything about the fellow or even where exactly he came from or his background, they disagreed. They wanted to get to know him more, but their daughter wouldn't have any of that . She just wanted to get married to him as soon as possible" There was another pause as a maid camee serving them some fruit drinks to wash down their breakfast. They must have concluded father and daughter needed some drinks to sustain their talk.

As we were being served, I pondered over what my parents would do if i brought some unknown guy home as my future husband and insisted on marring him as Harriet did. Knowing them, they would flip. I mean, If they weren't allowing me to go out even to school or to socialize with the outside world, what would bringing an unknown guy home make them do?

I shuddered. I certainly wouldn't want to find out as if being locked up wasn't enough. No, thank you.

"With the constant disapprovement from her family, she eloped with the guy. With no idea of her whereabout or what state their precious daughter was in,they were left in a dilemma. As if that was not enough, after having no idea about the condition of their dear daughter, a year later they received a call from this same guy their daughter brought home, telling them their daughter was dead.

"You can just imagine what state that information them in. The dad had a heart seizure and the mom went unconscious for several days. Upon their recovery, they filled a case that the man had killed theif daughter. And this is where the story ends. So far this is all i have been able to gather since the start of my investigation."

I knew there was more to the story and that he was just touching at the edges but i did not press him on. All he had told me was just enough. From the story, i don't even know wherether the unknown fellow did it or not but the story seemed to reveal that.

Maybe he didn't really get what he wanted and had to do away with her. I can just imagine him mistreating and abusing her all the time they were together and finally finishing her off.

Poor thing.

I saw from the corner of my eyes looking at the time on his expensive watch. He must be getting late. Better not keep him waiting. But I had to ask him a question that was nagging at my insides.

"Do you think he did it?"

Dad gave me aquizzical look and then seeming to understand replied, "I can't say for sure. All the evidence point to him-"

So he had investigated further into it. Not surprising.

There was more than he was telling and she knew it. He always did that. He tells me the details after the case and not before.

"-And he may have had a motive behind it. But, I can't quite shake off this feeling that it wasn't him. Something sinister is behind this and I will make sure to prevail it."

What would make him think that? Dad always knows better so I always trust his judgement on these matters.

I caught another glimpse of him looking at his watch. He must be enjoying the conversation as much as me, that is why he hasn't said anything yet, but I have to end it here.

"I hope so. I also hope you catch the real culprit," I said supportingly.

"You must be getting late. Let me take my leave." I added and was was getting up when you stopped me.

"I have something important to discuss with you."

I even forgot about that.

Without waiting for my reply he went on.

That was so him.
