His widowed mother, Mrs. Josephine Rabbit, as well as his sisters, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail live in a rabbit hole that has a human kitchen, human furniture, as well as a shop where Josephine sells various items. Peter's other relatives are Cousin Benjamin Bunny and Benjamin's father, Mr. Bouncer Bunny.

Mr. Michael McGregor, yes that is his full name, is an old Scottish horticulturalist intent upon keeping the rabbits out of his vegetable garden. He occasionally attempts to catch them to put them in a pie and to eat them. As he did with Peter's Father.
One day Mrs. Josephine Rabbit tells her children to go and pick blackberries for supper while she went to the market and bought bread. She warned them not to go into Mr. McGregor's garden for their father was slaughtered in there. The girls obediently went to the blackberry shrub while Peter mischievously went into the garden! He ate until he was stuffed. He had a pleasant time until he was spotted...
