Chapter 13 - Dream World

She was sitting in a beautiful field, surrounded by flowers. Her robes splayed out around her and she was making a braid with strands of grass. There was a waterfall not far off, and the clouds were fluffy and white against the bright blue sky. Her hood wasn't on. She felt free. The wind whistled around her, swirling her hair back.

There was a figure in the distance. It was slowly growing into a human. A human with tanned skin and dark, deep brown eyes. But not dressed in clone armor. Dressed in a loose, simple brown shirt and black pants.

Wolffe!

More free than she had ever felt, she ran towards him.

He smiled and extended his arms for her to jump into. Then she felt something sharp in her back, saw a flash of silver and screamed.

Barriss awoke with a start and sat bolt upright.

"You've been in this medical bay too much," a laughing voice said, and Barriss saw Katooni above her.

"Where's Wolffe?" Barriss said driftingly.

"Barriss," Katooni said softly. "I'm afraid we don't know."

Barriss lay down slowly.

"Had a bad dream?" Katooni asked.

"Yes," said Barriss.

Katooni smiled weakly. "I used to have dreams all the time. Now...I don't. They were always terrible. Always involved someone I knew betraying me, sometimes killing me. But...they're just dreams. Not real."

"But this one...seemed so...," Barriss said.

"Real," finished Katooni. "So did mine."

She sighed and sat next to Barriss.

"We will find Wolffe, you know," she said.

Barriss smiled weakly. "I hope."

"Don't hope," Katooni said. "Know."

Gungi was recovering slowly. He was shot hard in the chest, and had it been just a little to the right it would have gone right through his heart. Barriss spent her days sitting with the younglings next to the Wookiee's sickbed, thinking about Wolffe.

After Qorl had fell, the Republic had retreated. The Death Watch hadn't followed, but celebrated their victory with drinking and fighting, as usual. Qorl wasn't dead. Barriss didn't want him to be dead. She had hit him too hard. He had passed out. She hoped he was okay.

Meanwhile, Luminara's reinforcements had never shown up. What had happened to her, Barriss didn't know. She had tried using her comlink and holocummunicator both, but neither had worked. Though the comlink, she had known that, as it was linked to the younglings and Wolffe.

Gungi was sleeping peacefully. Barriss sat above him, her head propped up against her hand. When the medical ward's door slid open, she looked around excitedly, but it was Katooni. Her face was unusually light.

"Barriss!" she cried. "I know where they have Wolffe!"

"What?" Barriss cried, jumping up.

Ganodi shot an annoyed look at them from where she was tending a clone the next bed over. "Shh!"

"Sorry Ganodi," whispered Barriss.

"Come on!" said Katooni, and Barriss followed her out, ducking under the door. They ran out towards the communications room, Katooni in the lead. They opened the door there and slid in silently. Sinker and a bunch of other clones were standing around the holoprojector of the Death Watch's camp.

"Commander," Sinker said as Barriss walked in, saluting her. Barriss gave him a nod and stood beside him. Katooni stood beside Byph, putting her hands on the rim of the projector and leaning on them, surveying the camp.

"We think Commander Wolffe may be a prisoner of the Death Watch," said Sinker.

"Dang it," said Katooni.
