Goyle reaches for his trunks and I swear I hear a gasp of pain, but when I look up at the luggage rack, I don't see anything. First, I swear I saw a shoe and now I thought I heard something. This can't be a coincidence.
I pull on my robes, lock my trunks, and as the train slows to a jerky crawl, fasten a thick new traveling cloak around my neck.
At last, with a final lurch, the train comes to a complete halt. Goyle throws the door open and muscles his way out into a crowd of second years, punching them aside. Crabbe and Blaise follow. "You go on," I tell Pansy, who's waiting for me with her hand held out as though hoping I'll hold it. "I just want to check something."
Pansy leaves and people file past, descending onto the dark platform. I move over to the compartment door and let down the blinds, so that the people in the corridor beyond can not peer in. I bow down over my trunk and open it again. "Petrificus Totalus!" I yell, pointing my wand up at the luggage rack without warning.
Potter reveals himself as he falls through the air and lands with a floor-shaking crash at my feet sprawled on his back. I smile broadly. "I thought so," I say jubilantly. "I heard Goyle's trunk hit you. And I thought I saw something white flash through the air after Blaise came back..."
My eyes linger for a moment on Potter's trainers. "You didn't hear anything I care about, Potter. But while I've got you here..." And I stamp, hard, on Potter's face.
His nose breaks; blood spurting everywhere. "That's from my father. Now, let's see..." I drag the Invisibility Cloak out from under Potter's immobilized body and throw it over him.
The way I stamped on his face was more for me than for my father because if Potter hadn't got him caught at the Ministry, I wouldn't be a Death Eater. "I don't reckon they'll find you till the train's back in London," I say quietly. "See you around, Potter...or not." And taking care to tread on his fingers, I leave the compartment.
