Somewhere along in the bitterness

Jackson's POV

It's been two weeks since we first found out we had COVID and we got tested yesterday and are waiting for our final results. If we are both negative, we can go back to work and start saving lives again. Our results should arrive today so we should be back at work by the end of the week once we find a sitter for Harriet.

Today is the day we are going to tell Harriet about our relationship, hopefully she understands and takes it well considering she's not a baby anymore.

''Are you ready?'' I asked April.

''Yeah I think so.'' She exhaled. ''Harriet, honey, could you please come to the living room?'' Harriet ran from her bedroom and into the living room and sat comfortably on the dark coloured couch.

''Mommy and I have something to tell you.'' I said while crouched down in front of Harriet.

''So you know how mommy and daddy haven't been living together?'' April said in a comforting tone.

''Yeah.'' Harriet said innocently.

''Well, that's going to change. See, mommy and daddy love each other very much and are going to start living together again. Is that alright?''

''Really! So no more Matthew and no more Maggie?''

''Yep! No more Matthew or Maggie.'' I said with a smile.

''Do you have any questions honey?'' April asked while getting up and sitting on the couch next to Harriet.

''Are you going to get married?'' She asked with a giggle and an innocent smile.

''One day.'' I said while looking at April and holding her hand.

''Can I be the flower girl?'' Harriet's blue eyes lit up with excitement and anticipation.

''Of course! We wouldn't want anyone else!'' April said before giving Harriet a kiss on the cheek.

''Yay, can I go play now?''

''Sure.'' I said as Harriet jumped off the couch and ran back to her bedroom.

''Well that was easier than expected...'' I said with a crooked smile.

''I know. I was not expecting that.'' April replied with a surprised face and a grin.

''I was expecting 100 questions and at least one tantrum.''

''I'm surprised she didn't have one of her 'I'm confused so I'm going to freak out' tantrums. Those ones happen quite often.''

''All the time.''

''She was so calm about it. Did she even know that we weren't together before?''

''Honestly, probably not.'' I said with a laugh.

''Well that's the easy part done, the hard part is telling our friends and telling Matthew.''

''How is Matthew doing?'' I asked curiously.

''He's still on the vent and he's not improving, he's actually getting worse. They don't think he's gonna wake up.'' She broke eye contact from me and looked out the window trying to focus her attention on something else. ''Anyway, let's not talk about Matthew anymore. How's Maggie?'' April questioned with a hint of jealousy.

''She's actually engaged. His name's Winston, they're really cute actually.''

''Wow! So you're 100% over her?''

''April, yes of course I am! Our relationship ended ages ago.'' I replied with a chuckle.

''Okay.. I'm gonna go check to see if our results have been dropped off yet.''

''Okay.

*5 minutes passed before April walked back into the living room, Jackson was on his laptop checking his emails.*

''Did you get them?'' I asked.

''Yeah... and we're both negative!'' I pushed my laptop away and April flung herself on me.

''Yes... yes.... yes!!!'' I said between kisses.

''We can finally go back to work and see our friends!'' April said happily.

''I can't wait!''

''Me either. I'm gonna go make lunch, okay. Harriet! What would you like for lunch!'' I shouted so Harriet could hear from her room.

''Hmm grilled cheese!'' Harriet yelled back.

April stayed seated on the couch and turned the TV on, until all of the sudden an email comes through on my open laptop. It reads:

Jackson,

I know we haven't spoken in years but I thought I would email you before you accidentally run into me at the hospital. I have to come back to Grey-Sloan for an appointment. I need to have my burn scars checked up on and I was wondering if Mark Sloan was available to do the consult? When I booked the appointment the nurse said Sloan was very busy, is this true? I would prefer to have Sloan or a different doctor consult with me, I just don't want it to be awkward between us considering our past. I hope you're well, I heard about your divorce from April.

Kind regards,

Stephanie Edwards

Aprils POV

Why is Stephanie Edwards emailing Jackson? If she didn't want it to be awkward, why contact him at all? And the fact she mentioned our divorce! So invasive and rude. Should I tell Jackson about the email or I delete it preventing him from ever reading it? If I tell him he might want to talk to her, but if I delete it he could find out and it could ruin our fresh relationship. I probably shouldn't have read the email, I invaded his privacy. Plus, he's in the room next to me, he could have come in and caught me! If I delete it and he runs into her, she may bring the email up and he won't know what she's talking about. Oh! I know! I'm going to reply to the email.

Stephanie,

I hope you are well. Dr Sloan is on paternity leave and is not working at the moment. If you want, I can arrange for your appointment to be with our new co-head of plastics Dr Gilbert. He's very good, one of the best actually.

As for the divorce, that was quite some years ago and we've actually recently reconnected and have decided to give it another go. Our daughter Harriet is five now and she's very happy to have both her parents living together again.

Sincerely,

April Kepner
