Oh God, Hunter Grave. This man was either my dreams come true or the cause of my nightmares. I swear nothing between. He used to make my heart throb, and I can't say its not happening now. I reach for calm as I exaled deeply, forcing the air through the circle of my mouth. Hunter was the same as ever. He had the same mob of disheveled dark hair, though the ends showed hints of grey forming. His face had the same sharp dark eyes. No... they weren't the same. They had lost the sparkle in them, the eyes that reminded me of exploring an abandoned mine. Dark, dangerous, exciting. Those were dull black orbs, replacing what once had so much life in them. His height was the same, reasonably tall, tall enough to place light kisses on my forehead. He wore an tired expression, cleverly masked and hidden well by his acting skills. After all, he was an actor.
He fell into a long moment of silence, his eyebrows were furrowed, the previous words of the speech faded, mouth positioned to be slightly agape. Obviously about a thousand thoughts just went through his head. He snapped out of the cloud of thoughts and smiled smugly to himself.
“You do know don't tolerate tardiness around here, ladies.” He chuckled, obviously meant more for me than Lydia. The crowd of staff and people of important positions of the hotel immediately directed their undying attention to us. Just what we needed.
“Where was I? Ah, of course. Mr Smith, the previous manager has gone for an early retirement. I'm taking over his position, and therefore I will be in charge of all the affairs in this hotel, and everyone in it.” He grinned, the word 'everyone' purposely emphasized. Of course, he had to rub it in that he was the boss of me. The amusing glint in his eyes was infuriating. “I would like to discuss all the boring matters now, but I'm sure we all agree that we'll all rather be spending our Tuesday afternoons at home, tugged up under the covers, catching up on sleep.” He said hoarsely, some mumbles of agreement from the audience. He started walking along the side of the stage and giving everyone a long hard stare.
If there was anything I've learnt from married life with Hunter, it was that he was someone who was really observant, sometimes you don't even notice him observing, but its like an all behind the scences thing. He judged people with cruelty and without feeling guilty. We used to drive to random streets and point out the flaws of people who walked by. If possible, Hunter was more then my lover, he was also my best friend, someone I could share all my good and bad times with.
“You'll all be dismissed and I will continue talking about adminstration matters tomorrow. Have a good day everyone.” He flashed the crowd a million dollar smile, fixing his tie in the process. “Miss Devies, may I see you?” His voice was lined with deadly steeliness. Lydia shot me a raised eyebrow. She probably expected that to also get called, but lucky for her, she wasn't involved in my hot, sticky mess. I shrugged, pretending that I had no idea why that had happened.
“I'm waiting,” A silky voice called behind me, Hunter's head rested against a pillar, crossing his arms and doing a typical 'waiting for my girlfriend to finish shopping' position. Once everyone had filed out of the room, weariness and fatique went back to his face.
“Julie.” he whispered, his eyes locked on my face. “Yes, Mr Grave?” I wasn't done with his game. If he was going to embarrass me in front of the entire lot of hotel staff, two can play that game. His eyes darkened and his nose twitched. Annoyed, he glared at me. “Call me Hunter, sweetheart.” he said, a pinch of hurt and bitterness evident in his words. If that satisfaction wasn't the best feeling I could get, I don't know what is.
Smiling smugly, I slumped against the wall, my arms crossed. “What do you want, Mr Grave?” I queried, fairly curious. He waved his hand in a cirular motion, as if we were walking about the weather. “Oh, you know, a little catching up after 5 years.” I held back a snort and rolled my eyes. Hunter Grave was a direct and straight to the point person. Getting to know people wasn't his style.
Then, his face blackened, like he had just remembered something. Our conversations used to be like this, sarcastic and dramatic, something I would proudly call 'our thing'. Well, at least it used to be. His change of attitude was as if he had just snapped out of a dream. His muscles stiffened, and his facial experession turned cold. My brain immediately processed what had happened five years ago, on that very day. Suddenly, there was a big change in atmosphere. My eyes turned into slits and whatever charm that existed a few seconds ago faded.
A layer of silence surrounded us, the sound of the grandfather clock ticking second by second was all that I could hear. “Julie.” This time, it was held with a serious tone.
“About the movie we're doing,”
From the tone he used, I could tell I wouldn't like where this was going.
“It's going to involve romance. And we're the leads, I think you know what happens in every cliché plot like this.”
“Kissing?” I pulled the question out of the air, somewhat casually. I've done lots of smooching in plays. Soft and rough lips, gentle or forceful kisses, hot or ew guys, it's all in the bag. This wasn't anything new for me, and I knew it wasn't a fresh subject for Hunter either. Why was he looking to nervous?
“Yeah, but that's not all.” Hands in his pockets, stuttering. What could be that serious that Hunter Grave was acting like this?
“What is it?” I flinched impatiently. I didn't like to be kept waiting.
“It will involve intimate scenes.” He quietly finished, waiting for my reaction. I froze, my brain trying to proccess his words.
Intimacy? That's a sticky subject. No dirty minded pun intended. Let's just say that its not something me and Hunter have never tried before, but after what happened...
“No.” I blurted out, Hunter jerked his head upwards at my sudden reaction. “I can't.” After he betrayed me, I wasn't taking my chances to let him lure me into his embrance again. His irresistable, hot embrance I must add. Long lean muscles down his arms, his broad but relaxed shoulders and playful smile wasn't helping. I had an uneasy alliance with myself.
What didn't help was the hurtful look on his face, like he couldn't believe that I wouldn't do the movie with him after he cheated on me.
I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm. The stupid strong grip kept me from taking off. “You've already signed the contract, Miss Devies.” He said half heartedly, pressing his lips together. “You're going to be back here tomorrow, at 7am, sharp. I won't let you go until you say so.” He growled. Stubborness. A characteristic we both shared, and probably one of the reasons why we were divorced right then.
Fighting Hunter wasn't an option, and I wasn't all up for biting him. If I could try to use my mouth out of this one, but Hunter being Hunter would never bulge.
“Fine.” I watched as his touch softened and I pulled my arm away, and he nodded his head stiffly. I turned to leave, and his time, he didn't stop me. My fingers were wrapped around the cold brass door handle, when Hunter called me.
“Devies?”
I turned, to see a slight playful smile, maybe with a tablespoon of seductiveness. He looked me up and down. Was he... checking me out?
“The same killer curvy figure.” He said, his tongue licking the edges of his soft pink lips.
I really hate Hunter Grave.
