"Levi, watch out!"
The urgency of Andrew's words was lost to Levi. The on-coming mini-bus's diesel engine seemed to roar above the downpour.
Cameron and Eve, who were close enough to hear Andrew's warning, looked up. They watched with a pit crawling dread as their friend carried on cleaning the VW's windscreen.
The mini-bus swayed wildly as the driver negotiated the uneven surface of the road. No matter what the driver did now it was too close to Levi to stop in time.
The mini-bus didn't slow. Eve turned her head away, covering her eyes. Just then a crunching sound filled the air. It seemed as though it was the only thing anyone heard. The mini-bus dipped slightly, as though stooping to take a drink, the wheels dipping into a pot hole, before passing from view. When it did, Levi was gone.
The place where he once stood was now a void.
The camper door rattled as it slid open. Vicky jumped out soaking her jeans and trainers as she landed in a puddle. Eve reached for her phone.
Andrew hurried to join Vicky. Cameron, followed closely behind. Eve was always good in a crisis, her presence of mind hadn't deserted her, she dialed the emergency services while thinking of ways, hoping there would be, ways to help. Memories of the night they'd heard the news about Andrew flooded her mind. She heard her name above the dialing tone.
"Eve," Cameron hollered. "Quick."
She listened as her phone connected. "Pick-up, pick-up, she repeated. The dialing tone echoed in her ear mocking her hopes.
She pushed several thoughts, all them not good, out of her mind. Why is no one picking up? She thought.
She braced herself now. Andrew and Cameron blocked her view. She peered over their shoulders, tiptoeing to do so. "Let me see," she said.
